The film is getting a slating, too.

Hardly... 75% on rotten tomatoes isn't what I call a slating.

Went to see it last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not supposed to be deep and meaningful like From Hell. Just highly entertaining.

As for mentioning Miller and Moore together, I'd say that was perfectly reasonable, in certain contexts. They're both doing interesting things with comics. They don't have to be clones.

If you don't like it, sucks for you! :=

Well.. Just saw a matinee of this film. I have to say, I'm dissapointed, but the movie is far from being bad.

Praise: Great style, black and white was amazing. The chroma-key and rotoscoping of color was well done. Lots of great characters. As always, Robert Rodriguez's action sequences are amazing. There was plenty of violence, which is always a plus... The wonderful cast was highighted by Mickey Rourke as Marv. Best sequence in the film by far.

Critique: Alot of the 3D-enhanced effects looked rubbish and didn't fit. Some of the acting was terrible (Brittany Murphy has lost all of my respect for her...) And Elijah Wood just didn't fit as Kevin, for me anyways. As much as I love him, he just looked goofy. Maybe a little TOO much violence. As much as I love the blood and gore, sometimes there's too much for even me. The plot, of course, is too disjointed at times. Which is apparently a problem with a comic, and a problem I have noticed in RR's films.

All in all, this was a good movie. Not GREAT, like I expected it to be, but I was thoroughly impressed. This is hyper-noir for the 21st century, and it's something new... Which is exactly what RR is good at, doing new and exciting things.

BTW.. Which scene was directed by QT? I personally think it was the scene where
Spoiler
Hartigan rips off the Yellow Bastard's nuts. It's an allusion to the Chiba film "Street Fighter" where Chiba's character does the exact same thing to a rapist. And we all know QT is a fan of Chiba, and of that particular film itself.

Edit: Guess I was wrong about the scene.. Apparently it's a different one.

I met Robert Rodriguez, and got his signature, can you believe he wouldn't sign my ass? Anywho :P

When I was a little kid we had a sand box. It was a quicksand box. I was an only child... eventually.

MrColossal

have not read it really but if someone is a fan of the series they might laugh at this:

Just had a look at the Graphic Novels at the bookstore.. Didn't buy any, though, because I'm a cheap bastard and Borders is Horribly overpriced.

I have to say, this movie is the most faithful comic book adaptation to date. Each scene is practically ripped straight from the comic book. It's amazing. I guess that's what you get when Frank Miller is co-directing...

What "allusion"? The same thing happens in the Sin City comics. :P

I have just seen the movie and loved every second of it...

What? Elijah Wood was goddamn PERFECT as Kevin. He's supposed to be nerdy. You'd probably know that if you read the comics, though. ;)

But yeah, Brittany Murphy was horrible, but hey, I had no respect for her to begin with...

It isn't a GREAT movie, granted. But it is a great comic book movie.

As someone said on a different forum: "it isn't a comic book movie... It's a movie comic book".

I went to see it opening night but couldn't get in...but I did tonight, so here's my review.

Plot: 0/10
Acting: 0/10
Cinematography: 7/10
Music: 8/10
Action: 4/10
Overall score: 2/10

It seemed as if they wrote the plot as they were filming the movie because it is just aweful and completely random.  They try to tie things together with larger themes but it's really a pitiful attempt.

There are 3 main characters which is a risky move obviously since it means that there's less time to develope each.  It's actually not a big problem though, because they are essentially all the same character anyway, just with different faces.

Instead of having unique identifiable personalities in the characters, they all just have very flat one dimensional profiles.

All of the lines seem to have been written by the same person and they are delivered hastily and without emotion.

The supervillians are really stupid; you have a child molestor who has turned into a yellow stinking pot-belled Ferangi due to drugs to re-grow his testicles, and a Harry Potter/spider man ninja who eats human flesh to get close to God, and a crooked cop.

Probably one of the worst made movies I've ever seen!

Darth Mandarb

Oddly enough, I too just went to see this movie today.

Actually I rather enjoyed it, but then, I wasn't expecting anything from it (so wasn't disappointed).  I must admit that there's a part of me that, from time to time, likes to induldge in a really violent movie.  And Sin City definitely scratched that itch for me.

While I admit it wasn't great, I have two words that made it worth my while: Carla Gugino

Sorry for being a male pig, but she's just a knock-out ;)

stuh505

There were some hot chicks!  I don't know actresses though...which one was she?  The dancer or the psycho black one?  I must say I thought the girl who had the crooked cop ex boyfriend was the hottest...but maybe I only think that because she looks like my ex.

Darth Mandarb

Carla Gugino was the parole officer.  I would like to take a moment to thank God for making her.

The dancer (Nancy) was Jessica Alba, whom I despise with a strong passion.  She looks like the character from "In Living Color" who used to put her lips on a curling iron.

The psycho black chick was Rosario Dawson ... although, I don't think she's black, I think she's Hispanic?  If you think she's hot, watch Alexander ... you won't be disappointed ;)

So, it's the usual result then. Those who've read the book/comic or seen/heard the play/heard the play/hatever is shaking their heads in agony whilst all others say "Uh, yeah, it was ok.. nothing I'll remember though.."

Blergh.

However, they are rumors about making a feature film out of (the acclaimed by some reason) "30 days of night", and that will totally be like the comic, since it's basically a Paul Thomas Wankerson-movie but drawn and lettered. Sucky comic, sucky film. "It's ok, but nothing I'll remember.."

Constantine, anyone? "Dangerous habits" is so much better in so many ways. Why oh why`?!

It's actually quite the opposite, from what I've seen.
Those who've read the comics like the movie, those who haven't, don't.

It's a direct adaptation of the comics...
A few examples: http://www.filmrot.com/images/sincity-comparisons/sincity.html

It's the comics with bad acting. :P

I like the movie, and I didn't set hands on the comics until after I had watched it.

Maybe I'm just in love with Robert Rodriguez, or perhaps the biggest badass in cinema history, Mickey Rourke.
