Hello all! I'm like completely whoring the internet up for a Google Wave invite like some ravenous mental man. Whore whore whore!

Has anyone seen this thing? I'm getting a little obsessed. Help! :'(

Darth Mandarb

I sent countless emails from my gmail account using the words Google Wave over and over and over in the vain hopes I'd get an invite ... alas, it wasn't meant to be!  I, too, am very anxious to try this out.

There was a Google Wave thread a few months ago about the subject (if you missed it back then).

Has anybody on the forums here received an invite?

lemmy101

Whoops sorry should have searched. I'm just too darn crazy about this whole invite business! I'm currently on a massive whore campaign across twitter to try and convince/trick or otherwise cagoule someone into giving me an invite. ;D

TerranRich

This is just like GMail in the early days. Pretty soon, it'll be public. What's so great about it anyway? Other than the fact that it references Firefly a million times. ;D

What's great about it? All the sexy sexiness and the fact that it pretty much reinvents everything we use on the internet! :D

I must admit, things like this don't generally excite me too much, but when I watched that Google Wave demonstration a few months ago I was blown away... Its such a powerful tool*.  Almost overwhelmingly so.

*[Edit] 'tool' is the wrong word... it's a veritable toolchest... a shed even... a shed brought from the future by beautiful cyber-nymphs and filled with wonderous things.

Haha awesome. I somehow managed to blag an invite from one of the google programmers by sending him this picture:

If you got an invite does that mean that you have invites to share? And as for the "Pretty soon, it'll be public" comment:

Quote from: WikipediaGmail was launched as an invitation-only beta release on April 1, 2004 and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007, though still with beta status.

It was nearly three (3) years from initial launch to public release. And thanks to the kind members here at these very forums, I've had my Gmail account since 2004 (the very year it was released mind you).

So if you consider ~3 years to be "pretty soon" then sure. :P But I wouldn't object to giving it a try prior to 2012 (the end of the world mind you haha :-*).

lemmy101

Not sure yet, will let you know! :D either way I'm sure in the coming weeks / months invites will keep getting added on as gmail did.

Darth Mandarb

It was three years until gmail became technically public ... but it had millions of users before that because everybody that got an invite, had invites to share.  It was just a clever marketing ploy by Google (who are masters 1st class at marketing).  By making it "invite" only it makes people feel like it's a big deal to get an invite and thus they are "elite" and we weak-minded humans just love feeling like we're more important than others!!

I am very excited for Google Wave (Firefly references aside).  It feels like the next [r]evolution in digital communication.  If the only thing Wave did was cut down spam by 1% that would be enough for me to use it.

To restate my earlier point... meh. This glorified blog/chat client does, in fact, not really add functionality. It's basically stuff we've been using before, only that it clumps it together in one place. Slightly more convenience at the price of making data-mining quite a bit easier... that seems to be kinda Google's modus operandi. ;)

So, yeah, it's G-Mail 2.0. Inform me when something interesting happens.

TerranRich

Yes, it was nearly 3 years before GMail went public. And I lived just fine for 3 years without GMail. In fact, I don't really GMail all that much, as I seem to have a problem with received emails being delayed. Otherwise, it's great. Google Wave isn't "just another" anything, so it's a different story, but I repeat Akatosh's sentiment: "meh".

I got one nomination to give away to a lucky AGSer. It needs to be someone who's been REALLY itchy to get on it, and is super excited about being on it and simply CANNOT wait and has been tearing their hair out about not being in the first 100,000, as I only have this one spare and don't want to waste it on someone who's just curious or could gladly wait and deny someone who wanted it more. :)

Also bear in mind nominations are not instant and are not a direct invite, they simply make you a priority for Google when they send the invites out, a queue jumper if you will. Whoever it is will then be able to invite more AGSers as they will have nominations themselves.

I'd like it, but I think Darthy deserves it.

Consequently, I still have 94 gmail invites if anyone wants one?  :)

EDIT: If there is anyone else out there who has a nomination, I am dying to get hold of one. I can't believe uncle larry forgot about me again  :'(

EDIT2: for the rest of us waiting for an invite: http://googlewaveinvites.com/

<ProgZMax> I got an idea - I reached in my pocket and pulled out my Galen. <timofonic2> Maybe I'm a bit gay, enough for do multitask and being romantical

TerranRich

LOL, so it's not even an invite, just a nomination for a queue-jump? Jesus. So much hype... I know it'll be worth it, but I despise hype nonetheless. I'm taking myself out of this thread unless there's more news about it. :P

They can't possibly be proper invites because Google want a controlled number of people in the system at the moment for testing, so if everyone had invites to invite others then ultimately the system could bloat to millions of users before the servers are known to be able to handle it. Remember it's not a beta, this is a alpha preview thingy.

I would also be interested in any extra invites anyone has laying around.

I probably already use google for way too much. Might as well provide them with the remainder of my internet soul. They make the process so fun.

I wonder if that is really the difference between Microsoft and Google. Microsoft makes the whole soul stealing process painful and leaves you feeling bitter and used in the end. Google makes it feel good and in the end it buys you a dress and tells you that it thinks you are pretty.

I want to feel pretty.

Okay, sorry chaps but it's gone. Mr. Darth has been nominated since he very clearly fit the brief of 'obsessed about getting in' ;D, so at some point in (hopefully) the not so distant he can start spreading AGS Google Wave love across the boards and nominate up to 8 more as he sees fit. And so on and so on until AGS is all Waved up! :D

Stee

Hey Darth just remember how much I love you when you come round to getting your nominations/invites etc  ;D
