I was going to try to Windows 8 on one of my free HDDs lying around. However I was thinking if it is worth it so. So out of curiosity, Has anyone used it yet?

If you want to try it here is the link:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516

I got a new computer a month ago...and I'm still learning Windows 7.

I had been using XP for so long.

Icey

If I couldn't use 7 anymore I would definitely not switch or to vista.

Layabout

I used it through a virtual machine. It's nice, but wait for the beta before really trying it out.

Personally, I skip every sencond Windows release... if not more. 3.1, 98, 7, that's my experience curve, and I don't think I've missed a lot. 8 seems to be (mostly) an interface update without any functionality I'd care for.

Yeah, it took me about a week to get used to it, it was a rather big change in the interface at least, of course some good things but some bad things entered as well.

I'll pass on W8. And if there's something to go back on, then I'll take XP over Vista, the only reason I got mad at XP is that it locked me out when I put in a new graphics card and wouldn't take my license code and completely messed up everything but fortunatley I had a dual startup so I installed W7 just to try and was kind of pleased with it.

I've been tasked with testing Windows 8 at work, (ostensibly to make sure our own software works with it, but you can't blame a guy for fiddling), and my opinion is that if you're currently satisfied with Windows 7 then Windows 8 isn't going to give you a whole lot of anything.

Apart from the Metro UI, which is only really any use in tablets, it feels very much like a patch-release of Windows 7 rather than an OS in its own right. We are not looking at a giant leap here, more a tiny baby step.

Another Windows?

What are they stealing from OSX this time?  :=

Bulbapuck

I saw a friend post on facebook that switching to 8 was the best thing he had ever done :P

I'm not too excited by it myself.

Snake

I had no idea of this Windows 8.

They sound like they lead a rich, full life.

Icey

Almost forgot about this topic. Does windows 8 give you the option to install to a partition(second HDD)?

Khris

Sure, you can choose a partition (or create/edit them) at the very start of the installation, just like with Vista/7.
I installed it to a VMWare VM, nice but a bit pointless. Like has been said, it's like an App or minor Update for 7.

Icey

Ohh in that case. I might just wait it out and see what comes of it later on.

Technocrat

My brother's started using it on the Windows partition of his Mac, and he keeps complaining to me about all the things they've changed. Apparently, it'd be a lot more intuitive if his computer had a touch-screen.

Other than virtualization of directories (aka, "Libraries"), Windows 7 doesn't have any improvements of any sort that I'm aware of that make it genuinely better than XP was. And XP had plenty of flaws they could have improved upon.

Virtual directories are pretty nice though. I'd like to keep my computer reasonably organized, but eventually you're going to run into a file that fits into more than one category. What do you do? Duplicate the file? Shortcuts? Now I can put it in the most related place, but still find it amongst the other similar files too.

Oh, and this is about Windows 8..right. Well, Microsoft doesn't really seem to care about improvements (except possibly using more and more RAM to run graphical effects...if you can even call that an improvement), so I'm not gonna hold my breath for 8 to be anything breath-taking.

Layabout

Very few os updates, windows or mac, have been revolutionary. The goal for windows 8 is admirable. Instead of having 2 separate builds like osx and iOS, Microsoft are aiming for a universal os. Drag and drop files from your desktop pc to your tablet device. Not cloud, but actually dragging and dropping. That is cool. It will have cloud using their previously established sky drive infrastructure. Search improved dramatically from xp to vista, and this is being improved on again. No need to go to the start menu, just type. Switching between live tiles and desktop is instant. And live tiles! I love the idea.

what happens if you drag huge file after huge file to a USB stick or even external HDD? Are they finally queued or still messing up bandwith like with every modern OS?

I agree with you. I just reformat my laptop last night and just switched to Windows 7. I'm still not getting the hang of it.
