For some reason, I loved the first Spiderman deeply. I loved the geeky college environment, his mundane strife to get that girl and I could really feel what a relief those spiderpowers must have been for him.

With all those horrible cartoon-movies out there, Fantastic Four, Electra, Cat-Woman, Dare Devil etc, at least this movie has a modicum of quality drama.

I enjoyed this film a lot. Spider-man was the only superhero I was ever heavily into - I collected the comics for a few years - and obviously can still remember a lot of the mythology.

There were some moments that were a little TOO convenient in the plot, but I allowed a suspension of disbelief for entertainment purposes. Some bits are very funny (JK Simmons and Bruce Campbell both give great scene stealing performances) and I was pleasantly surprised that Topher Grace made a good Venom. My only disappointment in this respect is that Venom wasn't IN it enough.

Best of the three, in my opinion.

And Stan Lee even gets a line!

Batman Begins and X Men 2 were excellent superhero sequels.    Great theater experiences.

I don't think sequels are doomed naturally, but I think they didn't try very hard while writing Spiderman 3.   Too little character development for two of the villains, and waaaay too much with the third.  Kirsten Dunst is annoying and my main reason for being indifferent towards the series.   She was despicable in Spider Man 3.    Moments where she was leaving Peter Parker I almost cheered because I was sick of her face.

My favorite scene by far involves a Jazz club and an emo haircut.

The rest of the movie looked like silly putty.

Perhaps I'm not one to comment as I'm 100 percent bias towards comic book movies. I've seen them and loved them all, well all except cat woman. Anyways, I thought this was the best spider man movie yet. When I heard how many villains they were going to cramp pack into this sequel I was nervous, but I think they pulled it off very well. Getting to see Peter's darker side was very interesting. The only part that felt forced was Harry helping spidey at the end.

You thought Venom was done well?

Spoiler
Eddie Brock is exposed for photoshopping so he prays at a church for God to kill Parker.   Coincidentally, Parker is several floors above him dripping a substance from a meteorite which had crawled onto his moped during a picnic.

That entire storyline is paper thin.
Spoiler
Brock doesn't care about Gwen when she's dangling from a building but his life is ruined when Parker goes on a date with her?

I think XMen and Batman storylines have been so much better.   The villains have rational motives.  Take Magneto from XMen, Penguin from Batman Returns, and Stryker from X2:

Magneto thinks he's protecting his fellow mutants.
Penguin has been living an inferior life to the people above him whose garbage he wades through.
Stryker thinks all mutants are a threat to mankind and that wiping them out will save lives.

These motives are believable.   You can understand the conflict because ultimately were not sure if Professor X is right and Magneto is wrong.   Penguin HAS been treated like filth and deserves revenge.  Stryker IS threatened by mutants and would be better off without Magneto and others who ultimately kill him.

Spiderman 3 villains however...
Spoiler
The villains in Spiderman are mostly people who REFUSE to listen.  Harry Osborn never listens.   He's told the truth again and again so what makes him so bad is denial.  That's the source of his villainy.   Likewise Venom blames Spiderman for his problems, as does Doc Oc.    The sandman is a little different because the tables are turned.  Parker REFUSES to see the truth about his uncle.   Every conflict in spiderman stems from people being stubborn, and its difficult to watch.     Its difficult to watch Mary Jane and Peter break up because they could patch it up but Mary Jane decides to be stubborn.   Constant stubborness is annoying hence Spiderman 3 is annoying.

The first half of the movie went on pretty okay. The second half stepped very firmly into silly land, with bad or purely inconsiquent characterization, odd and absurdist changes in tone (jazz club? What?) and it generally became tiring, almost insulting to the viewer. I could not wait for the movie to end, and it ended three times just to mess with me.

I hate to be stubborn about Spiderman 3...  but according to the movie that's all there is to people.  To be stubborn.

It was an okay movie. Nothing more. However, I've never been a huge fan of the spiderman movies to begin with. This one was just kind of bleh compared to its previous two movies. It just seemed long, and as people have mentioned near the middle, some of it just seemed silly. The only thing to really look forward to were a few cameo's. But, if you don't expect much, which I didn't, it's entertaining enough.

Here is my review of Spider-Man 3. I think it clearly states my position on the movie.

PS: The reason for me having a livejournal account is that it allows me to easily update. Nothing else.
