I guess Pablo was right after all.. I'm not geeky enough to get you guys at times :)

I have all three consoles on account of being an idiot.

My experience is that the PS3 is the most expensive paperweight I have ever bought. I *do* use it for exclusives (Heavy Rain and LBP mainly) but if a game is cross platform I always get it on the 360.

I prefer the 360's controller, XBox Live is far superior to PSN and the 360's interface is much more friendly. Even things like updates on the PS3 are a bit of a chore.

Having said that the PS3 is clearly the geek-out system. It used to run linux for god's sake (and possibly will again if the lawsuit doesnt go their way) and its settings are much more in depth and it just 'feels' like an adult system.

In my opinion the best choice is easily the 360. The exclusives on the PS3 just arent worth it when compared to the things you get on the 360.

(also my PS3 is backwards compatible with everything and was mainly used for Final Fantasy 8 and Koudelka.. both PS1 games)

I only own the 360 and it's prett nice. I have been wanting a PS3 of late, mainly an early one to play all the PS2 games I missed. Both seem like competent systems, and I'm not much of a fanboy for either.

Same for me, except with the Xbox collecting dust, and the fact it wasn't expensive at all ;P  Also, I personally prefer the PS controller over the Xbox controller, mainly for how the analog sticks are placed.

Both these machines are the current pinnacle of home console entertainment. Ignore arguments based around GPUs and CPUs; they are not meant for the sane.

I own a PS3. It is good. It has good games.

I do not own an Xbox 360. It is good. It has good games.

Neither machine is going anywhere anytime soon, and much entertainment will be had regardless of flavour.

The only thing I will say is that the PS3 is also a blu-ray player, which is good for me. It may not be good for you.

A nice 1080p HDTV will be required to get the best out of either machine, though.

I also own a Wii.

I suggest looking for some retro machines instead!
Tell her to get a Sega (Master System or Mega Drive) or a Nintendo (NES or SNES).
There are TONS of great games for those consoles, all which are children friendly! :P.

I have a PS3, only reason I have ever considered buying an Xbox is because of the interest of coding games for it.
But like many others have said, both are good consoles, both have good games.

Wonkyth

Yeah, Peder's got it right!
most of those older games beat the socks off anything I've played on an XBox or PS3.

It all really depends on what games you are looking for.  Personally I don't want to fork out money for numerous xbox 360s.  I still don't trust their reliability.

MAn, if you've got kids from 10 to 8 years old you don't buy them an old used Sega Starun. They'll never forgive you. Imagine all your friends talking about GTAwhatnot and Halothishat, while you're playing test drive3. You'd be better off not buying anything. I mean, my brother's played gta3 on his computer, I tried to show him super mario & TNMT2 and basically everything on NES, but he thought all of them weer boring because they looked like nothing.

@Tuomas: So true.. parents can't do that. I remember a classmate who got a C64 at the end of the Amiga's lifespan :P Poor guy...

About buying a console at the end of its lifecycle:

The money loss on my Gamecube equipment is insane (hardware, controllers, games, etc) and it only lasted 3 years until the wii came out (yeah I bought it not exactly when it came out ;) )

So I strongly suggest to get a PS3 (or still a Wii - it has games for adults too. You know, with war and shooting stuff)

I own also both of them - my conculsion:

Xbox 360:
+lower purchase price
-but high follow-up costs

You have to pay for playing online, for an accumulator (otherwise you have to play without rumble because normal batteries are empty after 3hours),for a W-Lan adapter,HDD (arcade) etc.

PS3:
reversed situation
- hdd inclusive, controller with accumulator,W-Lan inclusive, free onlinegaming AND the the possibility to surf in the net!! (watching videos etc) - also a bluray player!

So the PS3 is "complete" and the Xbox360 needs always "upgrades". But its okay - I own both  ;D
