I'm just musing mind you but what if there were an option in the AGS editor to build to an intermediate game description language (perhaps ans XMLish thing), in additon to DOS and Windows?

In a sense, it already does that. The editor compiles a data file with the game in it, which is then run by the Windows/DOS/Linux engine. In theory there'd be nothing to stop somebody writing their own engine from scratch to run AGS games (except that the file format specs aren't public, of course).

QuoteThe fact of ags being c++ is fine you get c++ to java converters they rock! very accurate!
Iam sure if CJ checks this out he can dump the source code to some java coders and there are probably in this size of a community

Uh, yeah ... as scotch says, it's really not that easy. I guarantee you that porting AGS to Java would be non-trivial task and in fact it would probably be easier to start from scratch. Plus the fact, Java is really too slow to use for games.

As for you scotch I have no time to mess around. I do what i want to through as many channels as possible " ;D " he heh. So yeah i dont go to the bank i do internet banking. I dont go buy the new gta game i go online. the fact remains i am not always by my desktop. i use my phone thats why i bought a  smart one. Pda's are also getting phone features and you can make and receive calls on them check your email and surf the net. more pricey than phones however and i cant wait to get 1. now i didnt want anybody to convert their games I just wanted to develope for it and yes playing multiplayer on the phone is not farfar away guys cause you can already more complex games than any adventure could dream to be! so when you guys wake up from never never land then its all over and some russian crew decided to take the world by storm and ... no really where the hell did i put that gaint laser?

It's very hard to sound clever when your posts are almost unreadable.

Right, and the file format isn't published to discourage unathorized ripping of someone's game (I remember that from one or more discussions over the years).  So my musing was that perhaps there could be another optional file format that could be published.

It also occurs to me that such a format could also be readable/importable by the AGS editor and perhaps be the basis of a flexible import/export mechanism (i.e. for rooms, objetcs, chaaracters, etc as well as whole games).  Currently we can import/export characters, gui's and games via templates via seperate mechanisms.   Character import/export doesn't include any code, GUI import/export includes AGS event handlers but not any other code required by GUIs.

Again, this not really a serious suggestion; just something I find interesting to think about and thought I would share it with you.

I have worked on a number of such projects where it was desired to port an application from one programming language to another.   Code convertewrs work only in very constrained circumstances.  If you have a lot of repetive stuff they can cut some editing time, just as find/replace functions and programmable editors do.  The remaining obstacles to such a port are significant if not insurmountable.  There is no such thing as as an "EASY" button.  You don't have to believe me; just try it yourself.  Dump a simple game to text file(s), run it through your converter and let us know what happens.    :=

Sorry to rain on your parade, but IQ = intelligence quotient.

And uh. Your posts are almost unreadable, actually. Almost, not completely.

MrColossal

Fmarais, what are you talking about?

Who cares what your IQ is? What Kinoko means is it's very hard to read your posts sometimes, you just ramble and your grammar goes down hill so it's extremely hard to read what you're writing.

If you're not a native english speaker that's fine but when you're given something like this to read:

"Mabe we sud talk to the great AGS MASTER " It's a little confusing.

"1 of them sud have an answer iam really tired know gota go crash and reboot." the same.

Just write out all your words and don't use internet short hand and everything will be fine.

Hehe, can't resist this one   :P

  • If you have to tell everyone how intelligent you are then you probably are not.

  • "traid" is not a word.  If you meant to say "trade" you will notice there is no "i" in the word and that it ends in a silent "e".

  • IQ abbr. intelligence quotient
    Quote
Noun   1.   IQ - a measure of a person's intelligence as indicated by an intelligence test; the ratio of a person's mental age to their chronological age (multiplied by 100)
I don't know quite what it is but someone once told me I have a big one...  :=

  • Professor is spelled "professor" not "proffesor"

  • Kinoko has published a game and is working on another, markets several self-published Manga (Kinoko, hope Manga is the correct term for your work) comic books as well as other original art works, and maintains a comercial website.  It's my understanding that Kinoko is currently working on an RPG game using AGS, a challenging task for anyone, but especially so for a an artsie-fartsie non-programmer  type  ;D.  One might ask "What have you done lately?".

  • :) I think the proper term is emoticon.  Their purpose is to allow the writer to convey his "tone" or context in which the message is meant to be  interpreted.  Electronic communications can sometimes be terse and so can lead to confusion.  When communicating in person non-verbal cues provide a context to the communication.  So emoticon are used to express the non-verbal portion of a communication.
    Quote
Noun   1.   emoticon - a representation of a facial expression (as a smile or frown) created by typing a sequence of characters in sending email; ":-( and :-) are emoticons"

  • You're far to clever for me to keep up with you so I will leave you with a smile  ;D

I really don't know what you're trying to achieve here. All Kinoko did was point out that your posts are hard to read (which I think most people here will agree with), and you start resorting to insults?

Of course it's totally up to you what writing style you choose, but if you want people to read the entirety of your posts and respond constructively, you have to help them out by using paragraphs and punctuation.

Esseb

I second what CJ said. I have yet to read more than the first few lines of any of your posts. Carry on with this style of writing if you feel like it, and I'll carry on skipping over them.

DoorKnobHandle

oh and by the way...

look at your last post...

I've been there, might still be actually, haven't checked. If you want to laugh you can have a look at my profile, show all posts and look at the first posts I've made. It's pure horror. This community has helped me a lot.

Kinoko

Wow, my one little post caused such a fuss o_o

Fmarais: I wasn't trying to be insulting, but your posts on the whole ARE unreadable. You just need to type slower, do your best to spell out the words (we all understand if English isn't your first language, a lot of people here are like that, but they try), and don't result to throwing insults at people just because they criticize you. You'll get a lot of respect from people if you take it maturely, respond maturely (or not at all!) and stop calling people "jungle bunnies" (which is certainly a new one to me).

Posting about your IQ is unlikely to impress anyone here. What I think impresses people here is a generally nice and mature kind of person who on the whole, tries to get along with people and can argue matters without resorting to name calling.

I don't mean any offense by this, I'm just trying to help you out a little.

Rick: Aww thanks ^_^ You're a sweetie.

P.S. I'm not a 'dude', by the way, but it's a common mistake because my avatars are almost always of male characters :) It doesn't bother me much.

Blackthorne

I have the IQ of a coconut and the body of a spent Walrus.

Love me.

Fmarais, welcome to AGS.  Trust me, proper grammar and decent writing skills will make you a better communicator around here.

Good luck!
