I'm not usually one for "RIP" threads but the death of James Brown is very sad, and on Christmas day, too!! :( I used to listen to some of his music, and although I liked it all - I wasn't exactly an avid fan. Are there any Brown fans here?

Yeah, seems like a great loss for the world of art. I liked some of the "popular" songe he did... I can' t talk of the "pure" Brown, since I was not a big fan, but, still, he gave me memories enough for dedicating a couple of lines. R.I.P.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Not much of a loss imho, because he seemed to just be rehashing his old material. For those who still wanted to go to one of his shows it's a loss, but to the world of art I'm fairly sure it isn't, as he wasn't adding to it anymore.

A personal loss for his family I am sure it is, and therefore RIP.

Voh, that sounds somewhat insensitive.  :-\

EDIT: Infact, I seem to be quite irritated by Voh's statement! It IS a loss to the world of art thank you very much, as he made a big impact in the music scene, and musicians and fans all over the world who loved his music will feel the loss of their respected musician. Maybe it's just the way you phrased it that gets to me... It's like saying it wouldn't be much of a loss if Ali the boxer died as he doesnt step in the ring anymore. See how cold that sounds? I know that's slightly different to what you're saying, but it sounds the same.

He was a great musician. Shame he died, I like his music.

I know what you mean, and I want to specify that i didn't mean it in such a harsh way. What I meant was that since he wasn't really adding to the music world anymore, his death wasn't much of a loss to the world of art/music. I simply disagree with that statement. That it's a personal loss for his family, friends, fans and fellow musicians who love and respect him I do believe. Which means that I agree with what you're saying.

He made a big impact on the music scene, ages ago. Not so much lately.

You got irritated by what I said, yet I get irritated with people saying it's a loss to something when somebody who's pretty darn old and has lived the rock and roll lifestyle for an amazing 73 years dies. How many drug-abusing musicians can say they lived to be 73 years old? That's a very respectable age given his lifestyle.

(also, I'm really bitter concerning death right now as my grandmother's been diagnosed with terminal cancer, so maybe that's playing a part in this. I still stand by my statements, though the current situation is probably making me somewhat more harsh in my wording)

edit: By the way, another reason why his death isn't a loss to the world of music - his songs and materal aren't going anywhere. All his contributions to music will live forever. Which is a good thing.

Something particularly eerie is Brown did a song called "Christmas in Heaven" for his album Funky Christmas.

Eddie Murphy's role in Dreamgirls seems to be based on James Brown.   It was odd to watch that movie last night because of certain events that happen in that film.

Just to take the thread off-topic a bit, what's Dreamgirls like? Worth seeing?

I'll always remember his roles in the "Blues Brothers" and "Rocky IV" movies (at least I think it was Rocky 4? gah, and now there's like Rocky 6, ugh, sorry.. got of topic myself. Guess I'm gettin' old too).Ã,  But yes, I think he did have a big impact on the music scene during his career.Ã,
