Polls on this forum?

I'm not a big fan of polls.

They don't serve any major purpose.

If you want someone's opinion, just start a new post and people can answer in any way they want to without conforming to a pre-defined set of answers.

Thank you.

I think we should have a poll on whether to return polls to the forums.

Damn recursion.

Surley they would help if they could only be started my mods, and only put in the competions/activities forum.

Then again, people would post over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again (I hate people who repeat) just to make sure that their faveroute would win....we need CJ's oppinion.

Perhaps...

we should have a poll about polls?

no way, how many polls can we endure where Mods starts one about how we have to guess how big his penis is or where we have to guess how many times a given length of string would wrap around his penis or we'd have to vote on who would like to see his penis

Seven-hundred, forty-eight thousand, five-hundred and six.  Then, I'd definately want him to stop.  Oh, by the way, who's seen Mod's penis recently?  It's gone missing again.

Gilbert

It's been hidden in teh Blue Cup. ;D

Yes, polls used to be enabled on these forums.

Yes, people felt the urge to post polls about random topics such as "Do you prefer Coca-cola or Pepsi?", which are utterly irrelevant and serve no real purpose.

If you want to see what happens when polls are enabled, I invite you to look here: http://pub57.ezboard.com/froyalquestforumsfrm14

The problem with polls is that 99% of the time, nobody actually cares what the result of the poll is. They can be useful when there is a specific question, and knowing the answer is actually going to be useful. But too often somebody starts a poll for no real reason at all.

As DG says, if you have a question, just write it as a normal post, which gives people the opportunity to justify their answers rather than just ticking a box.

And eric makes a good point too ;)

Evil

Well, I think that Cj's example was good but it was a poll form. If moderators have to check them I dont think it would be a problem... I have an idea, lets have a poll! :P

Matt Brown

ok, that poll-poll joke has been done to death
word up

Ghostmaker

ghostmaker = 1 vote against poll's
total votes this poll = 1
So, this is AGS, i have seen more amature

Eero

How about just limiting making polls, let's say one in month?

Evil

But then whom would get it? I say have a mod make it/check it or none at all...

Jimi

how about if we asked if we were aloud to have a poll, and if the moderator thought it was apropriate, he's change the thread into a poll. And if he didn't, then he deletes the thread?

Pumaman

I have to say, I really don't understand what this obsession with polls is.

Somebody give me one good example of a good use for a poll that needs to be done via the Poll system, rather than just a normal post asking for replies?

Polls:

Leet people: "We want polls! We will be so mature and handle them with great care! We won't abuse them!"
CJ: "Ah well, all right".
Member one: "I want to start the first poll and get attention. I just need to come up with a good subject."
Member two: "If he could start a poll, I wanna start one too. Better jump on the bandwagon before it gets removed again. "
Member three "Look at those stupid polls. I think I will start one just to parody the silly subjects already started."
Member four: "Does he think he's funny with that joke-poll? This is a funny joke-poll."
Member five: "Bah, the poll-system really went out of hand. I think I will start a poll just to prove how badly the system works."
New member who hasn't read the poll debate: "Neat, a poll-function. Let's ask people if they prefer crab-fish or shrimps."

etc.

Andail hit the nail on the head. That's exactly how it would happen. We would get pissed off, and in another year we'd bring them back. Let's just not do polls. A moderator isn't a special person with the ability to suddenly make an important poll. Why would endowing (sp?) him with this power do anything at all? Polls just don't serve a constructive use, for the most part.

I can't even believe this discussion has gone on this long.  Even without a bad track record, why would anyone actually need them?  Don't answer that, please.
