Anyone planning on seeing this?  I was a big fan of Ringu and American remake, and evidently Hideo Nakata directed this new sequel.  Unfortunately it seems to have gotten some bad reviews.  Anybody seen it yet?

LGM

I might see it tonight with some friends. The trailers certainly make it look more intense, but I don't know if it can pull through yet. If it's better than The Grudge, I'll be happy.

hMM... It's been getting some REALLY awful reviews.  Of course, that's never stopped me before.  The trailer does make it look pretty creepy.  The first one scared the bejeezes out of me.  Most likely we'll wait for it to make it to the dollar theater (being broke really sucks!)

I think it's going to be great. The first one didn't scare me as much as it was a really good mystery that kept me watching, wondering how it was going to end (I even remember thinking: "Hey, this would make a good Adventure Game..."). I love horror movies, scary, non-scary OR cheesy.

The Ring was a great disapointment, so I doubt I'll waste my money on the ring 2. I'm still gonna give Ringu a shot tough, if I ever see it around.

Kweepa

If you didn't like The Ring, I wouldn't bother with Ringu. It's almost the same film after all.

As for The Ring 2, from rottentomatoes.com:
Ringu 93%
The Ring 73%
The Ring 2 28%
Oh dear.
I think I'll give it a miss.

(Foreign films tend to review better on rottentomatoes, partially because there are less reviews of the film.)
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Not to imply you guys specifically, but it's always got on my nerves that people call it "Ringu". I mean, that's just the way katakana works in Japanese, you can't possibly write "Ring" so it comes out with the 'gu' on the end. When we're speaking English, it should just be called 'Ring', really... Given that it's the original, maybe the US version should be referred to as 'The US Ring' ^_^

I've never seen the Amaerican one, and I only saw the Japanese one after it had been out for a long time, so I had heard all the hype about how utterly spooky it was. I'm an absolute, 100% COWARD when it comes to horror movies. I can't look at horror movie posters because I'll have nightmares. I had trouble sleeping for a whole year after seeing the Exorcist. Yet, I watched Ring and thought, "... er. Gee, that was disappointing". Not to say it was a bad movie (or that it wasn't), but it just wasn't very scary. Maybe it was a lot worse in the cinema, and particularly if you hadn't previously heard what the 'thing' was.

Just about everyone has told me the US remake was worse, and even less scary, so I have no urge whatsoever to watch that. Is the new US Ring 2 the same story as the Japanese Ring 2? Either way, even though I hate horror movies anyway, I've lost any respect I might once have had for these movies...

Kinoko beat me to the punch on the whole 'Japanese pronounciation' thing, so I won't say anything other than "I agree completely".

I'm not entirely surprised, actually, that the Ring 2 is bombing if it's based off of the Spiral (Rasen), or its merciful successor Ring "Let's pretend Spiral didn't happen" 2, Japan's sequels to Ring. It would make sense, as they didn't do so well over there either. Altogether, I didn't think it was a particularly scary story to begin with. Maybe I'm desensitized by slashers and other freaky stuff that my brother would subject me to when I was a little kid, but now pretty much nothing short of gory freaks me out anymore (And that's mostly just 'coz I'm kinda gore-squeamish). The whole attraction of the Ring, especially in Japan, is the element of the supernatural, so if you aren't really freaked out by the concept of ghosts and things that go bump in the night in the first place, it oughtn't to have much of an effect.

That said, I'm still likely going to be going off to see it tomorrow with some friends, and will be better suited then to give it a review. As far as the first is concerned, I have both the original Japanese version, and the American remake. They're good for entertainment, but I didn't find them overly scary, really. I just like Nakatani Miki, she's one of those rare actors I actually go to movies to see (Another wierd trait in and of itself).

Let's just hope that they don't remake the Korean Ring spinoff, "The Ring Virus". That would be bad. Or something like "Tomie", which though has nothing to do with the Ring series, was just so bad, I felt the need to mention it.

I refer to it as "Ringu" because that's the name of the movie as released in the US, where I live.  I mean, it bugs me that in Germany they change titles of American movies to completely different things (like Saving Private Ryan became The Soldier named Ryan or something like that), but I'm not going to make up names of movies based on pronunciation.

Kinoko

So it was released into the Us as "Ringu", written just like that? Then... well, whichever company did it are morons ^_^

Anarcho

I've only ever seen it discussed as "Ringu".  If you google "Ringu" you get a ton of hits, including this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0178868/

But, it does say "Ring" on the box.  I don't know.  Perhaps it was released with different titles.  I don't remember what the title was when I watched it on video, but I'm pretty sure it was "Ringu".

Hmmm, well, I never saw the Japanese version (Which since I live in the US, I ALSO thought it was actually called Ringu... my bad  :) ).  Anyway, I DID think Ring (us version) was scary.. but different people think different things are scary.  I mean, slasher movies don't really scare me all that much, unless they are REALLY well done... which is rare.  I just thought Ring was really creepy... plus, I watched it with my dad, and when it was over, he called my cell phone.... now THAT freaked me out.  Anyway, I liked the first one.

OK.... so my boyfriend and I broke down this weekend and spent money we really didn't have to go see the second one.   Ok, so it definately was NOT as scary as the first one.  It had it's creepy moments, but all in all it really wasn't that scary (Ok, so the hundreds of teeny boppers in the audience that wouldn't shut up the whole time kind of spoiled the mood...)  ANyway... it was a fun movie to watch.  There was some REALLY bad CGI.  There's this scene where deer were attacking the car...  it was terrible!  One thing I did like about it was it explained the story more.  You learn more about why all these things are happening.  The same little boy that was in the first one, is in this one, and I like him.  he does a really good job.... he's really creepy.

Anyway, I thought it was alright.  Some of it was good, some bad.

Whenever I hear the word "Ringu", this comes to my brain:

I have no idea how many of you that grew up with this cartoon.

I think the exact same thing... It sucks nowadays though. Did you know they changed the intro to some kind of child-pop version? It sucks

Hillbilly: Pingu r0x0rs. I used to watch that show everyday when I was 7 or so. Channel 2, w00t. ^_^

And, The Grudge sucks. Majorly. It actually made me laugh when I watched it. Especially that security camera part. :P

I did like the Ring, though. I might see the sequel in the next week or so, but I might be scared off by the terrible ratings on RottenTomatoes.com.

LGM

Go see Hostage instead.. One of the better movies I've seen in a theater for a long time.

The original Ring was the least scary film I've seen, and with some of the most clumbsy dialogue as well, I really can't fathom it's success beyond fanboyism.

[I do tend to call it Ring though, since I revel in mocking kana-isations of English words, Hipu Hopu and Mamugaramu being some of my favourites.]
