Anyone heard of this?  It's a Romantic Comedy Zombie movie by the people who made the sitcom Spaced.  And it looks frigging hilarious.

Apparently, Lugum, it's not really a parody (at least not a parody of any movie in particular); all the actual zombie stuff will be done in the classic Romero style, and the comedy will all lie in the people and their reactions to the situations they are put in.

Personally, I am an insanely large fan of Spaced, and have been looking forward to this film since I first heard about about it over a year ago; the trailers don't exactly stand up to the comic brilliance of that series, but a lot of the humour in the show was in the perfect timing, which is obviously lost somewhat when all the jokes are chopped up and messed around.

Either way, I think that this is a brilliant excuse to randomly quote lines from Spaced:

"Just... give me a reason. You think I'm unemotional, don't you? I can be emotional. Jesus, I cried like a baby at the end of Terminator 2"

"Jar Jar Binks made the Ewoks look like... fucking... SHAFT!"

Well, I've just seen it then.

Best film I've seen at the cinema in fucking ages (although the new Zatoichi was verily entertaining, it had nothing on this).

You should all see it too.

Comparisons have been made to An American Werewolf in London, and that's somewhat accurate; that film was quite funny in places (in a 'bloke in a dress!' kind of way), and rather good in the horror department, too; on the other hand, Shaun is absolutely frigging hilarious most of the way through, and as far as horror is concerned... well, I don't want to spoil it (reading a few too many reviews and articles dulled the impact of a couple of moments for me) but suffice it to say that, funny as the film is, at one point two blokes sat in front of me were laughing and I wondered what the hell was wrong with them.

I also have to add that, although I haven't seen the new Dawn yet, judging from the nine minute preview of that film (which serve as the primary reason I've yet to bother watching it), you would likely be ridiculously wrong to assume that this film serves as a parody of that one; unless Dawn got approximately one squillion times better after it's opening, Shaun just tears it to pieces in terms of zombienessness, and it's funny, and it has well-drawn characters, and it has fantastic dialogue, and I want to have sex with Simon Pegg (who manages to be incredibly attractive despite the fact that he's a ginger and he has a goatee), and it's the best movie evereverever and you should all see it.

They haven't sorted out a US release yet, but apparently one is on the proverbial cards; I found a quote by Simon Pegg (co-writer and star of the film) from an irc chat held earlier this week: 'We have a distibutor standing by. US screenings have gone very well indeed. we may be going to New York next weeks for some tests. It looks very promising.' - so looks like you'll be able to see it; may well be some time, however - 28 Days Later had almost 8 months in between it's UK and US releases.

Damn good movie.

Its not a parody, or a spoof. Its a black comedy.

Difference.

Basically its a horror movie that happens to be extremely funny in places. There's some great acting, great action, great gore, and some really good dramatic moments.

Also it shows how and why slow zombies are scary, sheer bloody numbers.

This is released in the US tomorrow (the 24th). Unless you have had your sense of humour chemically deadened, go. Ron Gilbert recommends it. You know it makes sense.

I was disappointed slightly, but it is worth watching (I watched it twice).  Like SS, I love Spaced, and other things the people involved have written/starred in, so perhaps I was expecting something as good as that. In my opinion, it wasn't nearly as well acted or written and it felt too much like a poor romantic comedy in parts.  I laughed out loud just a couple of times, I expected much more from these people.
However, I seem to be a lone voice, everyone else in #ags who has seen it loved it. Just thought I'd offer my opinion in case other people are expecting too much.
Also, I can't see how this can be described as a horror movie, except for the fact that it has zombies, do not expect to be scared.

I thought that it managed to be just as scary as any other zombie film, and while there WERE elements of cheesy rom-com in there, it wasn't bogged down by them.

I confess I was expecting this film to be utter shit, even though I LOVED "spaced". I just expected Simon Pegg to be being irritating without Jessica to counter him. Thank god I was proved wrong! this is a BRILLIANT film because it's GENUINLY funny, especially for those of us who are, like me, Spaced fanboys (who will get the benefit of un-ending in-jokes... "Fried Gold")

It's not a parody, it's a completely sincere zombie movie that is also funny.
My family didn't like it much, but I for one loved it, I loved the script, I loved the performences and I really, REALLY loved the completely non-CGI makeup and special effects.

I've never seen Spaced, I still loved it.

CGI is used a couple of other places, too, where it's even less noticeable.

I saw this film at the US premiere back in July and it was surely one of the best films I've seen this year.  It's a faithful zombie movie but also a great zombie movie.  If you like Spaced, you'll surely like this.  If you like zombie movies, you'll surely like this.  If you like movies that don't suck, see it.

I love this movie so much i watched twice in one go and then repeatedly watched the outakes because they are so funny. You can watch it on so many levels. What ever mood you are in.

Keep a close eye out for all of the references later on in the film, there are many. highly recommended!
