Sometimes people ask about a decent video editor. Usually the answer would be "this for £xxxx". But there's a video editor available for free here, someone might want to take advantage of their giveaway. I haven't tried it myself, but it looks pretty cool and I'm probably going to download it.

As I rarely see/hear of free video editors, this might be a steal. MIGHT. It could be awful ;)

But it appears to have effects, motion tracking and other tools (perhaps stabilization, not sure) that are typically only found in professional editing software that costs a lot of money.

Let us know if it's any good, the free offer ends on Feb 4th. I'll try and do the same.

Edit: It's Windows 64 bit only so I can't get it to install. (roll)

You need to share to Facebook or Twitter to download! Now that's... uh, odd?

Hmm, oh! Well noticed. I did that naturally (Twitter is useful for that sort of thing..) and didn't realize it was a part of the actual process. A lot of promotions nowadays require a twitter post, but it's definitely worth having an account at one or the other even if you don't use them, so many promotions and giveaways nowadays that require a share/tweet frist. Seems only fair though, a tweet for $150 off.. :)

PS. It has built in motion-tracking - that is reason alone to get it IMO... most other consumer options (beyond After Effects) for motion trackig are practically non existent.

the particle system seems to be in the (also special offered but pricey) extended version.

Ah poop, I wonder if that's the same for the motion tracking element. Well, for BASIC VIDEO EDITING..... ;)

On a side note, Blender now has pretty good Motion Tracking for free (as well as some video editing capabilities).

Sort of drawing on what m0ds said in the initial post, but could someone suggest some free video editing software? Something that has basic stuff like combining 2 (or 3 or 4) files, adding a separate audio-track, inserting images and so on, but not rubbish like Windows Movie Maker?
Avidemux doesn't seem to have some of them, Virtuadub has me going through the weirdest hoops to do some things (I can only have 1 image as a video, unless I rename their filenames as a numbered sequence, in which case I can have a sequence of images as a video as long as they are the same filetype).

Apart from Blender, there's also Lightworks, which is one of the oldest NLE applications: http://www.lwks.com/

Its now open source, and it might have improved since I last tried it. But if you haven't used Avid it's likely to be quite bewildering to use. It's a long, long way from being as intuitive as Premiere / FCP.

I use avidemux a lot for combining 2 or 3 or more videos and adding another audiotrack. Haven't tried anything with still images yet. But I like avidemux a lot more than vdub (and mods of it).

I gave it a go out of curiosity - it doesn't require you to share on Facebook/Twitter, it just pretends it does. Facebook/Twitter login window pops up when clicked, but the main page still proceeds to the download page. I only had to register and activate an account with them, and was instantly given the download link with product key. "Thank you for purchasing HitFilm 2 Express. All restrictions have been removed"

This said, I have absolutely no clue about video editing software so cannot really tell how good the program is :)
