Why do you want us to make the story up for you? At least, thats the way I see it. Oh well, here goes:

Lazy games creator is killed in a spontainious flaming in the AGS forums. Who could have done such a thing? On inspecting the charred remains of the games creator, our main charactor (Khan T. Beybotered) is lead into a whirlwind of conspiracies behind the sudden death of the lazy one, the hidden cult of Doetfuroos threatens him at every turn. Hey, this sounds like Pleurghburg. *shrug*

There is a moral to this story. People will give you silly stories if you ask them to make a storyline for you.

I think that this should be in the AGS talk and chat. Honestly, you can make up your own story.  I make up about 7 every day, weed out 4 of them and remember the 3 good ones. I have too much stories to make games from all of them. Here is a bit of general advice. It doesn't have to be complicated. If the story is short make only one main plot and no subplots. If it's longer  it's okay to make a few subplots. Also, if the story is short there is no need for a lot of characters. A story can't work without a villian.  A story can't work without a goal.  Characters have to have some contrast or they're all the same and there is no conflict created eg. passionate hero versus cold villian, unless they both are passionate. If it's a detective story the plot is more likely to be linear as in the end there would be the same solution. If the goal is something achievable through different actions eg. get rich, break free etc then the plot is easier to make non-linear.  Anyway, go out there and think up a great story!

Then try and add something that you wouldn't expect in your stories or a PB game.

For example, make all your characters fish and set it underwater.

I'm also planning a detective game, but using nothing but smilies as characters (Hence the title: Smilietown)

This is demonstrated also in movies: look at the Big Lebowski -- it's an old-fashioned detective movie but with a hippie in the detective role (and his sidekick is a Vietname Vet :) )

Just think of the best way to spin the straw into a different kind of gold.

Scid

What you want is vampires. And a big, black pyramid set in a futuristic, honk-kong like city. And a hardboiled film noir detective guy.

That is what you want. Realise it!
Those who can, do, and those who can't brag about how they do it at least fifty times a day somewhere on the internet.

Am I the only guy that thinks a samuari would make a cool detective? A samuari that is hired to find the presidents daughter, who was kidnapped by an evil senator named Gretsky. Gretsky would have hands made of gold too....

Now that would rock....

and never...I mean never forget to put ninjas in there....

Alky-line (AKA Alkaline)

Femme Fatale is right, you should be able to think up your own.. If you really want me to make up a sensible story for you, I will... But why specifically do you want it to be film noir?

There have been about 500 of those made...This is  just  a suggestion, but maybe try something else...(and not fantasy, either, preferably...)...Anyway, good luck...

Sorry, while we're on the subject of stories, what does everyone think about the top story on http://alkaline.cjb.net/ 's projects page...(Spectreforge)

post all your ideas on what you would like in a detective mistery here.

i'm making a game and all the ideas would make it even better.

Paranoia

There’s so many ways to get inspiration, play more games, there are thousands of books with this theme, and even adventure comics could give you ideas, movies, base your characters on people you know, and try to include their oddities.

Just trying to be helpful here…

People here will help you whenever they can but posting, requesting the same things in different posts won’t get you any brownie points, at the end of the day, you’ll get more of a buzz sitting down and making your own story/game, if you say your lazy now working on the story, how can you do the game?

Paranoia,

agswannabe,

Do not start more than one thread on the same topic.

You've already posted asking for help on your detective game -- don't post another.

I have merged the two threads together, but I will delete any other 'dectective game ideas' threads I see from now on.

That is such a good idea! I always thought that Jake McGurk looked a bit like this: 8)

Come to think of it, that looks like DG, too.

DG is Jake McGurk!

Squinky:
First Dark Hero, then whatever I feel like (which could include Smilietown).

Also, I want Smilietown to be a similar game graphically to Stickman.

agswannabe why don't you try making a simple single room game first? find yourself a character you can use in the future, two very good games spring to mind, "little johnny evil (first AGS game i ever played)and 6 day assassin", it'll teach you so much, i see in other posts you needed advice on background, it really good practice plus it'll give you something to show to other members and you may find they will be more willing to help more with future games

BTW DGMacphee, The likeness is uncanny ;)
