dunno if it's popular, but the outcome looks interesting.

Welcome to the forums, Bodzio, and I hope you have a good time in the AGS community.

In regards to the collage background creation technique that you linked above, there's no major problems with it, as long as it's done well enough. The most important thing about a background in a game is that it's useable in the game. The techniques employed in making that background are a lot less important. To answer your question, though, I haven't seen it used so much, so I wouldn't say it's a very popular technique here.

Going from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I'd say that the collage has a lot of potential to look good, but due to its being somewhat realistic, it'd be difficult to maintain graphical consistency (realistic characters for realistic backgrounds, backgrounds that work with one another). It might end up being a lot of hard work, but if you're willing to put in the time into making some good collage backgrounds, I say go for it!

Good luck with your projects!

Yes, I think the main concern is that it doesn't look like a collage anymore when it's done.

I'd still prefer pixeled 320x2X0 backgrounds every time.

I love the results.  Some collagey backgrounds end up looking very patchwork, which has its charms in some contexts, but I prefer this approach, disguising the seams well and making it look like one single image.  I've tried a similar approach and liked the results, because I can't draw for shit and this type of method is (with respect) a lot easier than drawing from scratch.

Oh, thanks for the welcome SpacePirateCaine and others:) I'm sorry that I said nothing about self:

As for the collage, I also think that it would be difficult to reconcile realism of backgrounds with pixel-art character. Besides, colage seems to be such a "little cheat" in relation to manual drawing.
Thank you again for your good wishes, and I will try to publish something in the future ;]
Of course, if anyone has any opinion yet about the collage, I will read it :)

Something you could consider doing which would help deal with the problems of consistency and "looking like a collage" would be to create a collage image, and then paint over it. Some of the artists around here might accuse you of cheating if you did that, but as a relatively underly-artistically-talented person, I'd say it's a fair way of doing it. I've seen a similar method whereby someone will create a room using a 3D modeling program and then paint over it.

I've done some paintovers of photos before and the result came out pretty nicely without too much trouble or work.
