Well, if anyone remembers the thread a while back, about weird medical experiences, you'd know that I suffer from Chronic Glomular Nephritits, which is now an End Stage Renal Disease.Ã,  Meaning that both my native kidneys in my body have failed (Either dead, or less that 10% of the nephrons functioning).

Kidney diesease is pretty awful, and I never thought it would happen to me.Ã,  It clouds my life a bit, having to undergo dialysis for about a year was tough.Ã,  But, there are people that are on dialysis for years, and I was lucky enough to undergo a Kidney Transplant about a year after my diagnosis (and near death experience!).Ã,  My father donated one of his kidneys to me, which was incredibly generous of him considering I'm a lazy pontificating bastard - but seriously, I got a chance that some people wait YEARS for, or never get at all.Ã,

The transplant hasn't been perfect, and there has been lots of problems, but I haven't had to do dialysis since November of 2003.Ã,  Dialysis is awful.Ã,  When I think about it...... it makes me shudder.Ã,  Anyway........ along with all the typical dramatic bullshit that goes along with such an event, there's been plenty of funny stories about it too.Ã,  Makes for an interesting life, that's for sure!

I have a bad case of Ewing's Tumor.  Also, I see everything twice.

But seriously, I grew up having Night Terrors.  They know more about them nowadays, but when I was a kid, the doctors just couldn't get enough of my violent bouts of sleep-walking/running hysteria.  I would seriously get up in the middle of the night, convinced that my bed was upside down or dinosaurs were on the loose, and run around the house, smashing my head against the refridgerator and slapping around my sisters.  No joke.  They put me on epilepsy medication, the only side effect of which was "severe drowsiness and confusion."  AWESOME!

I use taking that shit for fifteen years as an excuse for whenever I feel inadequate/less awesome than say, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Einstein, or maybe Tears for Fears.

Wow, this is getting personal.  AGS Forum, are you my lover now?

I'm colorblind and have a tad of scoliosis (I think). I also have to wear contact lenses in both of my eyes.

But it's cool, and I'm fine.

Okay, that's my medical report.

Right. Then PLEASE don't listen to Sentenced's Excuse Me While I Kill Myself (at least not on my recommendation := )...
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

I have a chronic illness of sending messages to people whose sig file image is WAY too big.

Like when they have a height of 125 pixels and they should be no taller than 50 pixels like it specifically says directly above where you have to enter the information for the image ...

I just made up a song for you, heres how it goes:

"Yeah yeah yeah"
"Quit Being a dumbass"
"Yeah yeah yeah"

If that helps you with your problem, I can maybe record it for you...

Woah nelly Plague! Ã, I think you should open an ear to Have you Never Been Mellow, or just calm down a bit...

Well, since the thead's been bumped...

I have sucky eyes.  It's not a chronic illness per se, but heck, neither are many of the other things here!

I became cross eyed as an infant, had a surgery in preschool which kinda fixed it, had another one in 1st grade and the latest in 3rd grade.  Now, I have a lazy eye, but can control it (make it normal again, etc.).  It usually only goes out when I'm tired or bored, because I don't notice the double vision as well.  A fourth surgery seems unlikely at this point.  Ooh, right, and I am also nearsighted, have a strong astigmatism, and some other small, random problems.  Meaning, without glasses, everything is blurry.   :P

I also tend to do things, be positive that I did indeed do them, but run back to make sure anyway.  "Did I close that door?"  etc.

Hoo-hah!

My mother has diabetes, and she's been doing fine. It's amazing some of the technological leaps there's been, such as those little Insulin Pen thingies.

As for myself, I swear I have a mild case of OCD. It's not too terrible, but there are some things that if I don't do in the correct order, it'll bug me for an hour or so.

Hmmm... if I leave a refridgerator door closed, but not completely closed for sure, it bugs me. I have to open the door and close it again.

Also if I squeeze a ketchup bottle when I'm using it, but close the bottle too fast, so it's remains partially squeezed because of the pressure inside -- that bugs me too. I have to open the ketchup bottle and let all the pressure out and then close it again. :P

I wash my hands a lot, too. Well, not an unusual amount, but sometimes my hands feel a little bit dirty and I have to wash them to feel better.

EDIT: Or if a pencil is slowly rolling off a table... I HAVE to stop it from falling off the table. It bugs me. I'm a weirdo. :(

I'm also a diabetic for about 10 years now and get along just fine.   AGA is right about  the "you can't eat sugar" thing.  It's all about carbohydrate intake.

When I first found out I read a lot and measured my blood sugar very often.  One of the work things I do is design closed loop control systems for industrial processes, so naturally, I came to understand what was going on in terms of a closed loop control system.   So perhaps my explanation will put your wife's mind at ease.

First of all there are four ways glucose is removed from the blood stream.  It can be converted to fat via insulin, stored in the body tissues  as glycogen, burned during exercise, or dumped to the urine.  Most type-2 diabeties results form over consumption of carbs.  The body tissues become glycogen saturated and so the body begins producing insulin to store the excess glucose as fat.  At some point the body stops storing fat and dumps the excess into the urine.  There are variations in glycogen capacity, fat storing capacity, etc between individuals.  That's why some people can get to weigh 800 or more lbs couldn't get that fat no matter how much they ate.    It's my understaning, for example, that Austrailian aborigines almost always develop diabetes within 6 months of moving from the countryside to the city and it dissapears completely in a similar time frame when they move back.

As I mentioned earlier I measured quite often, sometimes hourly so I could see what was going on.   I noticed that there seemed to be two control loops involved.   One with a short time constant (a few minutes) and one with a long time constant (an hour or so).   From my reading I surmise that the shorter time constant is related to the glycogen mechanism and the longer time constant is releated to the insulin mechanism.   I also noticed that potatoes are bad, very bad, and that steaks are good.

Most doctors don't have an explaination of why a diabetic's blood sugar levels are higher in the morning than at night before going to bed (with no meals during sleep of course).    My hypothesisis is  that this is the result of the body trying to rid the body tissues of glycogen.   What I do now is measure twice a day, just before bed and first thing in the morning.   When my sugar is under good control the readings are lower in the morning than at night.  If it gets higher or closer to equal then it means I have to back off the carbs for awhile.   I don't take insulin and probably never will.

I find your comments about your wife consuming carbs surprising.  I suppose she is doing that because of the pregnancy but it is surely aggravating her diabetes.   If it were me I would ask the doctor about it.   Maybe she could not eat potatoes and rice?    I walked out of the "diabetic" class my doctor sent me to because the nurse was contridicting herself.  She was telling us that we should reduce our carb intake and at the same time showed us the food pyrmid that says one should eat mostly potatoes, pasta, bread, rice, etc.   I asked her to explain and she couldn't or wouldn't.  When she wouldn't acknowledge the contradiction in her presentation I walked out.   Tell your wife to not woryy about diabetes.  If she gets it permantly she will have to look forward to eating steaks. ;)  Hope this is helpful.

Actually, now she is following the Dr Bernstein diet (see Amazon for his books) which is a very-very-low carb diet. I mean, she takes cream in tea instead of milk becuase it has slightly less carbs! Atkins to the max.

It seems to work most of the time, but she does get a bit depressed about it sometimes, pigs out and then gets her sugars too high. But she is able to control it most of the time without any insulin at all, evenr though they think she has type 1. Wierd.

Heh, I do that too... The rare cases I get the feeling that my hands are really dirty, I just have to wash them... And for some reason I'm not very found of doing anything that I get hands dirty in...

Hahah, I have that hand washing thing too. Even If I've just washed my hands, walked around the house for a few min and then went to the kitchen to grab something to eat I HAVE to wash my hands, even tough I haven't touched anything since the last time I washed them. Or whatever, if it makes sense.
You got it!

Hmmmm. I have chronic lower back pain. Have had it for about five years. I can't sit down for more than five minutes without it coming on and saying on for hours or even days. I've seen every type of quack, but it won't go away. Exercises help calm it down, but after 5 years of it, I'm afraid it's here to stay.

I have bad mood swings too, usually between normal and depressed. It has little to do with lifestyle. My hormones just seem to swing all over the place despite how good or bad my life is going at the time. I could take it more if it had more ups. That being said, I suppose I'm greatful that's all I've got. From reading this thread (and knowing other people) I could have much worse problems! If this is all I have to deal with, I think I'll be ok.

I guess it's good to have at least one thing wrong with you...then you can join in threads like this one!  ;D

I had Namonia (sp?) when I was four, does that count?

I also have this wierd condition (not really an illness, but still painful and annoying to me and those in my path) in which my mind "sticks," usually after awakening from a bizarre dream. I'll wake up and have this one thought in my mind, and I'm totally unable to stop thinking about it. I literally can't do anything but overanalyze that one thought.

This just happened to me again this morning. I couldn't eat, sleep, or drink, so what did I do? Went online and posted on this forum and pissed people off, only to be embarassed at myself later.

I wonder if they have a name for it. If not, it could be called "Blidumbasszersyndrome."
