Mouth for war

I was just thinking and had to let go off a little steam :D I know I'm not talking for everyone, these are just my thoughts. Why do they make horror games for the PSP and other handheld consoles? Crappy sound from internal speakers. A small damn screen that makes your neck ache. Ok I can understand that younger people who never had a Ps1 or whatever wants to play games like the first Resident evil game, but INMO 50% of the experience is lost if you play it on a DS or PSP

Does the developers really think we will have a terrifying moment with that kind of equipment? Ok I play those games not only for the horror but for the entire adventure, but since it's SUPPOSED to be scary I'd rather play it on a big screen tv with surround sound in the middle of the night :D
I also know it's a good way for the companies to make money on old titles but still...just the idea of having horror games on those things...hehe

Sooo...anyone of you guys have a comment? cheers :)
mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, next to soccer

Try sitting under rusty hooks in a deserted slaughter house with sound isolating headphones. A little more unnerving that your living room.  :=

I heavily disagree.

I own handheld consoles because of the experience. And you're being extreamly unfair in your comparison. "When I play one game with excellent sound in the middle of the night it scares me far more than when I play with horrible sound in the day, that must mean that the second version of the game is far worse!" :P

As Chicky said, play with headphones. It increases the experience SO much :)

Personally, I don't buy scary games for consoles as they mostly don't scare me (Silent Hill 2 being the exception). But I know that the reason is that it's an old TV with mono sound. So I buy for PSP and NDS instead.

I game entirely with headphones. That is to say, my gaming audio experiences take place right up against my earholes. So I've never had much call for multiple speaker configurations.

But the PSP is one of the better examples of portable gaming audio.  MGS Peace Walker, for example, has an astounding sound mix. But you'll only hear it with earphones. Silent Hill Origins and Shattered Memories both do a decent job of conveying audio horrors, though their mixes are slightly compromised by the limitations of the hardware. But earphones are a must; everything on the PSP sounds fairly lifeless through the built-in speakers

The original Resident Evil has fairly crappy sound, regardless of how it's played, so I wouldn't mark that down to the format it's on.

The DS, though lacking the benefit to audio the UMD format provides for the PSP, isn't too shabby in the sound depart either. Dementium: The Ward does a pretty good job giving voice to it's horrors, and the Castlevania games are all solid examples of utilizing the DS sound hardware to good effect.

But, again, without headphones it's all academic.
