Elliot Smith. If you know who this is and can name one of his songs, you get a cookie. Seriously, he compares to Kurt Cobain. One of the best artists of all time.

I love Elliot Smith! "Alameda" and "Needle in the Hay" are a couple of my favourites. Unfortunately you're right about him being comparable to Kurt; they are both dead. Elliot slit his wrist last year.  :'(

Enlightenment is not something you earn, it's something you pay for the rest of your life.

I don't think if he had the same cultural effect as Cobain, but he was a great singer (if not a better singer than Kurt).

The Presidents of the United States of America are simultaneously the best underrated band and the worst over-rated group of world leaders. Except kings.

Adamski

I bump this thread in the name of my released EP here: http://www.aud-stim.com/stim044.htm , which might interest the handful of electronic music liking people around here.

Nine Toes

One band that I think is seriously under rated is a band from the states here, called Systematic.

I saw them on April Fool's Day in 2000 in Green Bay, WI with Godsmack, Cold, and Staind.  I was blown away.

I found out the other night that they've separated after only 2 albums (2 very kick ass albums, I might add).  They not too heavy, I would call them hard rock.  Like I told Femme, I don't understand why these guys aren't more popular and well-known, but maybe that's a good thing, 'cuz you know... you get the fame, you sell out, right?

Well, anyway.  Here's hoping this isn't the end of Systematic.
Watch, I just killed this topic...

First of all...do you really want these underrated bands to become overrated?  Because honestly...don't you kind of like it when you discover some less-known music, don't you like listening to stuff that isn't blaring out of the radio 24/7?

But...if you must know, some underrated musicians that I love are...

1) Faith no More
2) Muse
3) Doves
4) Remy Zero

and here is a really cool song by an underrated band called Shiva in Exile which you can listen to streaming:
