We all know what PCs and Macs and all these names refer to. We all know that PC is an abbreviation of Personal Computer and has nothing to do with any operating system. Despite this, I still say PC and Mac and everyone knows what I am talking about.

This reminds me of one cool company name here. It is "Universal Credit Bank" in english, "Všeobecná àšverová Banka" in Slovak, they used to be known as "VàšB". Some time ago, they changed the logo and also the name. Now they are "VàšB Banka" which stands for "Všeobecná àšverová Banka Banka" - "Universal Credit Bank Bank". Still, no one is worried about that.

People say - "Send me an SMS". And we all know that SMS is a Short Message Service. Despite this, I am not going to say "Send me an SM" just because of this fact, you know...

Got a bit off-topic, sorry for that... 8)

Apple have always marketed its Mac as different from a PC so I think we are excused for using the terms PC and Mac to mean two different types of computer when we all know that a Mac is a type of PC.
They created the distinction, not us.

... anyway... no normal PC would have one mouse button... just like no normal human has one big eye in the center of their head... they would still technically be human, but they would probably market themselves as a cyclops. ;D

Well, it's a good thing apple have produced a two-button mouse since '05 then ;)

Personally, I think it's just a matter of choice... I own the new macbook pro and have both OSX and XP installed on it and I use them indiscriminately! I prefer the OSX interface, but I am also a gamer, so I have XP installed for the sake of it! :)

Really?... Then why are most Mac users insistent on still using the one-button mice?  Is it so they 'feel' different to normal PC users?... using a second button is degrading. ;D

Well, it still looks like a one-button mouse, but it has this sensitivity thingy that feels where on the mouse there is more pressure! Alot of mac-users don't even know about it, so it might be a slightly retarded design...

EDIT: Thinking about it, it's actually a four-button mouse. Right, left, scrollball click and side button.

Yes, all Mac mice now have 4 buttons.

The laptops are still single buttoned, but they have a cool workaround.  To right-click, all you have to do is place two fingers on the trackpad and click.

Cool stuff I found out: Men are four times more likely to be struck by lightning than women.  Wow, really? [dirty joke] Maybe this has to do with the fact that us men have "lightning rods"? [/dirty joke]

hmmm... my mate has a recent mac and conceded something like 'the one-buttoned mouse thing is a bit of a bastard'... I wonder if he knows about this two fingered malarkey.

I don't get the "crash" criticism at XP.
For example, last year, I recall at most 10 crashes. And every time it crashed because I did something really stupid.
Windows XP, if the hardware is proper both under computer case and users skull, does not crash. I don't know about Macs, but I guess it's about the same.

Windows ME, well, that was a different, painful and terrifying story. Let's not remember this one.

Viruses come and go. But to be afraid enough to skip playing games and aaaallll this software available to PC's sounds childish. "OMG, let's not go outside, never, you might catch cold!" Something like this.

Again, if you know how to handle viruses and how to browse net (get warez and porn from proper locations (P2P!), don't click banners), it's quite unlikely to "catch" something. Honestly though, a scan once in a month or two is still very advisable and a routine for casual windows user.

But just as with Linux, Mac users are OFTEN fanatics. Blind and dedicated, ready to attack even when there's no need to.
IMO, fanatics suck.

But with Macs being different, and so isolated from evil, "virus-infested" PC world, it's kind of interesting to see parallel technology evolving. They're still catching up with PCs. And still, in every damn Hollywood movie, that computer on the desk of department of whatever has a shiny blue apple logo.

I think Mac users (and I'm aware of generalising) have a tendency (as do Linux users) to feel they are on morally higher ground... that they have escaped the tight clutches of the evil, multinational, exploitative, bully, Bill Gates Corp....

But I don't expect Apple's practices are that much more ethical, are they?  As long you've got access to Strong Bad's emails, who care's right?

Anyway, back to the original poster: the reason why many people don't get Mac's is because they're so damn expensive!
Sure, I could settle for a guaranteed-to-run Mac for $1,000 and up, but I could build my own PC and put Linux on it for much less.
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

So true.   My 15" MacBook Pro cost $2,499(US/CAN) while a Dell with equal (or maybe greater) specs would cost $1099 (US/CAN).  Lucky for me, I got my MBP as a gift.

When it comes to pricing,  the MacBook Air is Apple's worst product ever!

-1 USB port
-no firewire
-can't remove battery
-can't upgrade memory
-no built-in CD/DVD drive
-80 GB  HDD(Slow) or 64 GB SSD
-Poor battery life
-Mono audio (I think)
-No ethernet
-Less than average graphics

All this for the wonderful price of $1799 (80GB HDD version) or $3000 (64GB SSD version).   Awesome!   :D

So have PC users because they think that they are on higher ground just because Mac users think that they are on higher ground. It is the same. One side under a window and the other under an apple. Beside that, it is exactly the same thing.

Every system has its advantages and disadvantages.
Im sick of people arguing that one is better than the other for whatever reson.

Fact is, MOST people are bias, they own 1 PC with 1 OS and insist its the best and have no experience with any other system.

Luckily the community around here seems to be of a generally higher age than most and have tried many different OSs over the last 30 years and are probly in a better position to talk about it than the people i come across in other communities. :D

(This particular quote used as representative of everyone else saying similar things.)

Actually, I do find this terminology rather problematic. I know whether people are talking about an OS, an IBM PC (if anyone ever talks about that) or just any home computer because I can infer it from the context, but it is certainly not unambiguous! My laptop is a PC, but it's not "evil" or "virus-infested" (not the terms I would use, anyway, so don't call me a fanatic), has no Microsoft stickers or bundled stuff, and runs Debian GNU/Linux. If I want to talk about any other PC that is running Windows, I will refer to it as a computer running Windows (assuming that's the relevant part). I don't see the problem with saying what you really mean, nor do I see the reason for defending not saying what you mean.

I agree, tho i do it a littel differently.

The MAC, i always seem to refer as "The MAC" even tho its just a "PC" running OSX
The others i just refer to as "The <Operating System> PC"

Most other people i can also tell by how there talking or what their ralking about.

All these namings are quite disorienting. Can't companies simply join hands and create McWindunix?

Well,

I agree with these mac snobs thingies, BUT:
Both my mother and my father are graphic designers, and thus we have four macs so far, one really old, two 5 years old and one completely new. I am not a mac snob. I do not say that macs are better. But I can definitely say, that they are somewhat faster in certain things. They handle PS and these kind of things better. And I dont talk about pixel art. I talk about 300MB images or so. They handle FreeHand and Illustrator better. This software has been originally made for macs, if I am not mistaken.

So - Stupot and radiowaves - from your statements I can now clearly realize that we are just stupidly rich businessmen (and the money is well hidden so we cannot use it until we are dead), we go to vacation every week, I go to a rich private school and so on.

I agree that PCs are more universal. I like to have a PC. But if I did things like my parents do, or whatever macs are better in - I would no doubt get a mac. I agree there are many people using macs just for their image yelling "Look, I have a mac, I am cool because I am different!", but guys - do NOT throw everyone into the same pack! From what you have written, it seems that you are just as "cool" PC users as those "cool" Mac users. You are now doing the same thing as mackers do with PCs - complaining about how it is useless. You are doing the same, just in different color.

As Darth said - they are just different. Not more, not less. That's it.

That is because I presume they mainly use macs only for gfx, am I right? Yes, they can probably handle the stuff betterthan an average PC. The thing is, that people are just lazy to construct their own PCs, so the processor isn't dividing the recourses correctly, no matter how powerful it is. Therefore yes, macs can quarantee a quicker solution, but that doesn't mean its better. I am studying gfx also, work with 300Mb images and I still don't think macs are better. A good Dell will beat the crap out of it. You can work on mac as well on PC, but PC is more versatile on the hardware side and don't promote one certain pack like mac does. PC doesn't have the attitude that you have to limit everything to one single brand because it is just not about brand. Considering that Macs are turning more and more PC like, the brand limitation just gives off a negative commercial vibe for me.  And I don't know where you got that money talk...
I am just a shallow stereotype, so you should take into consideration that my opinion has no great value to you.

I still find it funny how the Mac users are called pompous when this thread is full of Windows users being pompous.  I'm also still not sure why there's even an argument.  Each platform is going to be right for certain people.  Choose the one you want and let others choose theirs.

Don't we have more important issues to debate, like politics...
