Who do you think should be in the "Frat Pack"?

I coined a phrase! I coined a phrase! Yay!

Yak and I were having a conversation on #ags earlier tonight and we got to talking about the Rat Pack (50's), the Brat Pack (80's), and current day actors that seemed to form their own version of the Brat Pack. By definition, these are actors that are in "teen movies" very often and star with each other randomly, in groups, like the Brat Pack did.

I called it the "Frat Pack". Who would you include?

In the Brat Pack, I came up with Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy (?), Rob Lowe, and Ally Sheedy.

In the Frat Pack, so far I have Julia Stiles, Ashton Kutcher, Sean William Scott, Jason Biggs, Chris Klein (?), Mena Suvari, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Rachael Leigh Cook.

Anyone care to add/delete/comment?

Eliza Dushku?  Katie Holmes has done a few.  And, of course, there's the duo of Matt Damon & Ben Affleck.

[edit: Withdraw Damon & Affleck, not quite the same genre]

The difference between the Rat Pack and the Frat Pack is that the Frat Pack sucks.

Er, I beg to differ. Let's take a look at the Frat Pack movies.

It all start with "Can't Hardly Wait" (1998) with Jennifer Love Hewitt. I watched parts of it and vaguely remember it, but from what I can recall, it was a good teen/high school movie. Then there's "American Pie" (1999) and "Loser" (1999), both with Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari. If you think American Pie sucked, then you're worthless. :P And Loser was pretty good, IMHO. As for Julia Stiles, there were "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999) and "Down To You" (2000). Never saw Down To You. 10 Things was a bit teenybopperish (sic, YakSpit), but it wasn't horrible by any means. Then there are the loads of movies with Freddie Prinze Jr. that qualfy as teen movies ("She's All That" (1999) among them). I've heard that She's All That wasn't all that bad for what it was.

Looking back now, I don't know why I included Kutcher. I included Sean William Scott for his parts in "American Pie" and other comedies.

Well, to be fair, I was talking about the actual people, not the movies they made.

(although I don't like any of those movies.  also, American Pie sucked.)

Thank god I'm not the only one who thinks so. I don't understand everyone's love affair with a movie that is 90% annoying crying and whining and 10% unrealistic, annoying dialogue, and add another 10% of whining for good measure.

That's 110% of sucking!

I once read a Movie-A-minute script somewhere that went like this:

The Breakfast Club

All the kids: I HATE ALL YOU GUYS!!!

The kids smoke grass

All the kids: Hey, you guys aren't so bad.

THE END

Meh, I prefer Ferris Bueller.

Speaking of which, did you know the guy who played Rooney got busted for kiddie porn? -- No wonder he was after Bueller.

He wanted to give him more than just a detention.  ;D

Hey, I'm a poorly developed loser girl, but the popular kid put makeup on me and I got with the Jock! AWESOME!

apart from that synopsis, Can't Hardly Wait and She's All That were amazingly dreadful.

As much as 10 Things was a cute and pointless film, it says much about the genre that it is one of the better teen films made  from any decade. At least it knew that it was stupid, pointless, light hearted and unrealistic and thus emulated it's source material (Taming of the Shrew) in all it intended to do. I have to say that Clueless, as it also knew what it was (and was gifted a lead who didn't need to act for the role) succeeded  more than the drivel and insidious messages found with John Hughes' of his modern day emulator's tripe.

And I liked Not Another Teen Movie.

I also hated The Breakfast Club. My friend made me watch it, saying it was one of his favourite films of all time. Idiot.

Kweepa

I like your friend.
I also like the Breakfast Club.
Sure it's cheesy, the dialog is unrealistic, and there are appallingly bad moments that make you cringe (the dope smoking then dancing scene, the elephant trunk scene, etc), but... actually, it's pretty bad really isn't it?

It's cheesy.. that's why it's good.  It's the epitome of 80's psycho-babble drivel.  It's utterly unrealistic nonsense.  That's what I enjoyed The Breakfast Club.  It's akin to the enjoyment of B-grade horror flicks, only in the comedy genre.  St. Elmo's Fire was supposed to be another great 80's drama/comedy starring many of the same actors.. I didn't find it nearly as memorable.

I utterly despise most movies aimed at teens today.  The ones that don't take themselves seriously are at least somewhat redeemed.

Eh, I don't know.  I think for a movie to say "Well, I KNOW I'm cheesy, so it's ok that I suck!" is sort of a cop-out.  If the movie itself knows it's bad, I won't even bother.

I don't know if it'd count as a teen film as such, but my favourite would have to be Stand By Me.
