6DA: Having difficulty with the gameplay.

First time player, but I'm having trouble with the window shade.
I tried the walkthroughs that were linked, but they didn't give as much information as I needed.

Like how do you use the wooden plank and the nail for instance?

Just use it to close the blind on the right window.

I already know about using it on the blind and the bullets in the case, and the hairpin, I'm having trouble using the plank on the blind in general. I click everywhere on the blind, and I either get nothing, or he walks across the window and gets shot.

Watch carefully at the items, I think there's a red dot showing the hotspot of it, that's the position the item will interact with other thingies.

Unfortunately, the hand always has a red dot in the middle of it.
What is the face Icon/cursor for?

Maybe you just never played sierra style adventures before? For using one of your items on something on the screen you have to "take it" from your inventory, so one of the cursors will have the shape of the inventory item. When the cursor has the shape of the inventory item you want to use, you must click on the place where you want to use it.
The face icon is for talking to someone, but the woman is, obviously, dead
