Title: Trilby's Notes - help thread
Post by: Sam. on Mon 26/06/2006 11:04:51
I might as well start this thread as people will inevitably get stuck, as I am, and to limit the amount of needless threads.

Plus, im stuck.

Spoiler
I'm just wandering the hotel, confused. I unlocked the toilets and read the journal, what am I actually supposed to be doing?

I'm stuck after the painting event, where you play as Matthew. Abed said there was a gallery in a room next to the dining room, but the doors are locked. Can someone tell me what I have to do next.

Another question. Is there an easier way to find out what commands to use. Cos someeimes its difficult to tell what something is and what to call it. E.G. I was stuck in the bathroom cos I didnt know what that orange thing was till someone said that it was an envelope. So is there an easier way to figure this out or do you have to guess. And one more question. Whats that red and yellow thing on the desk at the reception room.

"pick up the crowbar" and "climb" ladder. go to the dining hall and "use crowbar on nails" near the boarded door while in the shadow realm. ''take a pill" and then enter the door.

About the end scene...
Spoiler
First of all I tried dying, and he said it wasn't time yet. I kept trying to do all sorts of things. I drank lots of cola because I thought the caffeine mentioned in the response would give me power to get up. I tried kicking the idol, grabbing my coat, drinking wine (which gave the wierd response that I should specify if I wanted to drink from the wine bottle or the cola bottle.) Talking to Siobahn. Then I tried dying again, and it worked! I don't know what out of all this actually made a difference... I did notice that the messages displayed indicated him becoming less and less strong...
[close]

And then I want to ask...:
Spoiler
Did anyone manage to drink the wine? And did anybody actually find any use for the cola? Has anyone found any easter eggs/hidden puzzles/in game jokes?

I think it is because
Spoiler
She was tied in the other world; so when the ritual got unsuccessful, the hotel turned back into reality again. And she was not tied in real world. Guess the same is also valid for Trilby's wounds.

By the way; were the musics are in .mid format? I couldn't hear any music in the game, and my PC doesn't play midis for a long time. I would be really sad if I had finished the game without any music :(

.mid or .mod, since the music is bundled in the main executable.

Yes, you missed out. It's very odd that your PC doesn't play midis... if you open Windows' master volume properties there's a separate channel for midi - perhaps that's turned down low or muted.

Oh, and thanks for the walkthrough, jet!

From the readme file: On some computers the Windows WAV sound volume may be automatically turned down when the game is started, making sounds but not music inaudible (you will notice because the movement of the cursor on the title screen is supposed to make boop boop noises). To rectify this, alt-tab out of the game and manually change the Windows volume control to a comfortable level.

Try getting the silhouette over the door, then tap UP to get him against the door. Then tap RIGHT to until he's in front of the window, and then tap UP again. That should do it.

Don't feel bad - I had no idea what to do in that room either until I read jet's walkthrough. It seemed particularly tricky for the second room in the game, when you're not exactly sure how the movement works or how much the parser understands.

Sorry, I'm not sure how to wrap texts in a hidden spoiler window, but

BEWARE, SPOILERS APPEAR BELOW

I've come to the top of the house, seen the scene with the woodcutter and his son, gotten the note from the agent which tells Trilby to meet him in the cellar, and gone there. It was empty, and there doesn't seem to be a way of returning to the "light" world, I tried drinking water from the puddle. The walkthrough says "SPACE: Walk to chest, OPEN CHEST", but I can't get to any room containing a chest.

EDIT: Nevermind, solved it.

EDIT, AGAIN: Yes, this was indeed awesome. I even think this series is comparable to professional "classic" DOS-adventure games (such as LOOM).

There already is one, above. Although, I would like to know, relating to possible easter eggs...

Spoiler
I drank some cola in the real world and entered Siobaun's room, which led to a room with the number 287 scrawled all over the walls. I assume this is the date 28th of July, so I tried setting that as the date on my windows clock, but noticed little difference. Trying to leave the room leads to a grey firelit room (The druid's house from the last flashback) and shortly after was teleported back into the hallway. A while later I found myself in the cargo bay with the coffin from 7 Days a Stranger (did this happen to everyone?) and was then teleported to the lobby. Is there anything to do in these rooms that people know of?

For all those quesitons about the last area...

Spoiler
The main point is to input as many commands as possible, even if you can't actually move. Each time you do seems to increase a counter, eventually you will no longer be able to talk, at this point just input as many commands as possible (Get Idol for instance). Eventually Trilby will say the only thing keeping him alive was his own will. That's when you can finally die.

Hey,I got a message for all fo you that play to Trilby's Note...Tell all the nightmare that Trilby do during the game.Like me,i saw:
-You walk, and when you change of scene,Trilby transform himself in the Melder for 5 sec or less....
-When i change of scene in the Real World, sometime i teleport to the Deck on 7 day a Skeptic with the black box in the center, and i've already teleport myself in the house of the monk Gadabath or something like that....
-My last "nightmare",i discover it the same way that the other.but we teleport ourself in the basement of DeFoe Manor, near the manacles, and the Melder ,with his machete,go down the stair a approach us....That one really scare me....
Anyway,if you want to know if you are in a night mare, just tape any command that make sense, and it will say "It hurt" ...tell me if you saw other nightmare!

I think it's Trilby's waistcoat - it's missing from the stump room at the end, and he asks Siobhan where it is. Cabadath says at the end that they have the blood of the guide.

The fact that Siobhan doesn't answer Trilby when he asks for his waistcoat is a little suspicious...anyone think she might be in on it too? That would explain why she didn't get killed like everyone else - they only left Trilby alive because they needed him and killed Abed Cahal at the first possible opportunity. The flashbacks show that it's not possible to run from Cabadath...

Also, she never answers how she got past the doll/door to get out onto the roof. Admittedly this is probably only so Yahtzee could take the pills away from the player to make sure they were in the shadow world basement where the hole was dug.

I might be reading to much into it :P

Any thoughts?

Correction about the final puzzle.

Spoiler
When Trilby is lying on the stump, move once. Just type "move". It makes his wound worse. Then all you have to do is wait, pressing Enter when messages pop up. The "keeping me alive" message is purely based on time since the wound got worse, and is not affected by any other commands.

The fact that Siobhan doesn't answer Trilby when he asks for his waistcoat is a little suspicious...anyone think she might be in on it too?

Not only that, but...
Spoiler

how does Siobhan get free? She's struggling with the ropes the whole time, and then, after Chzo comes and goes, suddenly she's there resuscitating Trilby.

You could put it all down to artistic licence or plot devices, of course, but it is a bit suspicious, isn't it? Maybe Yahtzee is leaving the way open for Trilby 4...

get the pliers from the bar, and use them on the nails that are hammered in the skeleton hands. Then pick up the brown envelope that have pills inside.

Hello.
This might sound silly now, but I've looked at the topic and I haven't found a solution for my problem, which is:
I have seen the painting cutscene and I have the crowbar, but Tribly won't use it on the doors in the dining room that are next to the toilet in the "hack'n'slash" hotel. He says they're just not tough enough.

Please help and would someone please tell me how to hide messages so I don't ruin it for everybody?

Use it on the "boards" infront of the door, not the door itself.

Don't know how Siobhann got free- maybe she wriggled around enough for the ropes to loosen. I do have a comment about Trilby though.

Spoiler
I think it's possible for Trilby to have come back to life without divine intervention or reality shifts.

You see, you are technically dead when your heart isn't beating (aka no pulse, breathing, or heartbeat). If someone performs CPR within a certain amount of time (quickly), the person can be brought back to life (chest compressions force blood through the system and restart the heart, rescue breaths circulate oxygen and force the lungs to work). In the game, Siobhan said 'she didn't know if she was doing it right and that she apparently did' when Trilby came back to life. She was probably referring to CPR. It's no guarantee that someone can be saved with CPR, especially by an untrained "civilian", so Siobhan and Trilby must have had a stroke of luck.

Hi,

I'm kind of stuck in Trilby's notes now, please help me. I collected the arms/legs and head of that dummy on the top floor. Then I entered the backyard(the first backyard) in shadow realm and took a pill, and after that, one leg was missing. I looked all rooms that are available at this point for the (again) missing leg, but it is nowhere to be found. Is this a bug? Do I have to start again? :(

Pretty damn good game, like the way it ties 5 and 7 days in:

The idol all the way through,
and the fact that at the end he begins to decide what to do with the idol, which links wayyyyyyyyy into the future in 7 days where the note displays "special agent trilby...DO NO OPEN" and so on.

Sorry if that was blatently obvious.

But I heard alot of people claiming that this was the best trilby theyd played...really?

I found one more. I tried to open the door to the roof and a message was displayed: It hurts
Then i tried to open the door once again and a new message was displayed:
It hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts.
After that I saw nothing unusual. I think all these things are random and thats they appear each only once. Plz tell me if you find any more of these.

It's likely to be a problem with your PC rather than an AGS or Notes problem. Have you tried other AGS games? Do you hear music in them?

In the Normal Realm there isn't much music when your wandering round the corridors, sometimes none at all, but you should get the voices and scaary sound effects when you are in the alternate realm and in the flashbacks there is music.... I don't think there is a problem with your computer, you probably just have to do something to trigger some music... how far into the game are you?

Nope. In the backyard the pills will work with instant effect. Yahtzee thought of everything. It took me some time to get to the "evil" backyard (wanted to see what is there, I am one of them "explorer" types).

EDIT: I wasn't sure so I unpacked the game again and played through to that part. And yep, they work instantly in that one room. ;)

You're supposed to do it in a hallway. On the right in one of the hallways is a door, with a fire detector above it. The correct hallway is one where you could enter a hotel room .. but you're not supposed to do that.

I think its a bug with the timing of the level. The important messages that Trilby says only come up after a certain amount of time, and the timer seems to start when you load the level, even if the scene was half way through.

The only way I could finish the level was to say the proper word (you'll know what it is) after sitting through the entire scene and waiting for Trilby to say he was ready.

If you don't get it the first time, remember, do NOT restore a saved game from the middle of this scene, it will not work right. Load a save from before it starts and it should work fine.

I'm going to report this bug to Yahtzee. Its really the only explanation for why the scene doesn't work half the time.

Hi guys,

have a prob.
I couldn't go further in the game, so i used the walkthrough posted here.
I got the head from the professor and the walkthrough says now: "(LEFT LEG) Go to the reception and GET LEG from desk." the problem is, Trilby doesn't get it and says "I doubted i could have taken that with me." Can someone tell me what to do?
thanks

The reason you can't take the leg is 'cause you're in the shadow realm ^.^ It confused the hell out of me too, but then I randomly switched back, and all the limbs are in the real world, for some bizzarre reason. Enjoy the game anywho, I just finished it, I wish I'd discovered this walkthrough before I got right to the end, would've made it a heck of a lot easier -.-

hey... i got the same problem... i went asking around in many forums... need help here please!

For the last scene,

Spoiler
MOVE several times and Trilby will say different things as he degenerates, the right moment to DIE is when he says his vision clouds and only will to live is left. Logically, you cannot die in any moments just your mind  wishes.
