Well the game i plan to make is called Generic Adventure Game, and these are sprites i played around with for the main character.

So which style would youl, the player, like to see in teh game. An old-school EGA adventure, a cartoony one (like say Rode Quest 2) or A VGA sierra type adventure.

I plan to also do some sample Backgrounds in the same style which i will also post in this thread.

And here be the sprites...

Please note i am critiques on the style, not the sprites themselves as i do know there are error which i will fix when i decide on the graphics style.

Those are all pretty cool.
How about a selection screen at the start? :)
I think the central one has slightly more character, but at that size, it might be difficult to get all the detail you want into some of the characters and objects.
If you have the time (you seem to have the skill) I say go VGA.

I like the first one, and the last one. It depends on the length of your game wich one you choose. I guess that drawing the last one (most to the right), takes much more time than the first. But if you can, then go for the last one!

Great work!

I prefer the VGA style, but...

"Rodekill Style" works perfectly and would make the background so much easy to do, IMO.

Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

EGA is nice, but I'd prefer either the cartoony one (possibly with more shading?) or the VGA one. Awesome work on all three anyway :)

Personally I'd like to see a game with all EGA graphics.

The one on the right looks good too, but it needs more contrast or more saturation to make it less bland.. maybe change the gray of the shirt to a grungy tan.

TheYak

I love the EGA one..  but I prefer VGA backgrounds, so the VGA one would be my second choice.  Maybe a hybrid?  Generic plot-line bit: Pirate from EGA-era transported through time, ends up against a VGA background?  Okay, it's a stupid idea, but I would find it kinda cool.. make for lots of nifty NPC comments and the like.

Evil

I love the Rode one, but maybe add a bit of VGA shading into it. They all look great but the cartoony one I like the most.

Do0kie

I vote for EGA too. I just love the style of those old games.
Second would be the cartoony one.
And third the VGA one - there are just too many games with this style already and it's getting pretty boring.

I disagree that VGA sprites are boring.  I say go with the VGA sprite.

I like the middle one the most, followed by the one on the right, then the one on the left.

Great work,

hmm having to choose I'd say that I like the third ones technique, but applied to the second ones style..
(did that make sense?)

I love the color choices, especially with the details.

well done!

FruitTree

they're all great!
just great!
I can't decide between the first 2...
but if I'd had to pick one, if my life depended on it, I'd have to say the one in the middle  :)

I prefer the middle one, I quite like very much the shadeless style...

Penguinx

I'm going to be the odd ball, here.

I like the VGA style the best. More work? I don't like the cartoony version very much (it doesn't seem to have as much personality as the other two to me), and I like the EGA one as a distant second.

If you are going for nostalgia, go EGA. If you want to make something that looks closer to a (dare I say it) commercial effort, I would go VGA.

Let the rotten vegetable throwing commence! ;)
