I drew up this sprite, I might use it in a game, but I draw a lot of characters like this.  Can anyone give me some constructive criticism?

Plus I was also wondering, I've tried making a walk cycle for this little guy, but it doesn't seem to ever look right.  Suggestions?

Lastly.  I can never get the colors to look right.  If I save it as a .gif or a 256 color bitmap, the entire color scheme of the image changes, the color scheme only gets preserved if I save it as a 24 bit bitmap.

Oh yeah, and it doesn't look right when I scale down or up.

Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

well one thing, not to be a dick but i think i can say with 100% accuracy that you traced an image from Stor Troopers http://birgits.net/eng/eng_grafstor.shtml

now there's nothing wrong with that but let's call an edit an edit.

i think the best thing you can do is start on a side view and animate that first. it's easier than a front view in my opinion and you can learn a lot about how he moves and a lot about animation

what program are you using so i can know how to help you with your colour problem

I did take a sprite from somewhere and use it as a template... but I liked the way the sprite looked, and now I use it as a template for a lot of my characters.  Don't get me wrong, I still do draw my own, but I can't say any of them look the greatest.

I just use a standard MS Paint tool.

EDIT:
Now that I know of it's origin, this sprite did start out as someone's avatar.  I think it might have been C. Leksutin's.  It had shades and a bald head (no offense, Lex).  I had no idea of the origin of the sprite until today.  My bad, so don't flame me, please.  I know what I wrote sounded like I was taking the credit, but that wasn't my intention.

i didn't flame you in the slightest...

MSpaint is terrible... i haven't used it in so long and when i did i stuck to the normal palette

my advice is get another image program like gimp or something, scan the link at the top of the critics lounge for the free graphics programs

When scaling no sprite is going to look 'right'. The only way to get this is going to be with high res and high color. In some cases, like roger and indy, it works out but still doesnt look right. The way I go around this is by not having to scale. If you want them to walk into the distance make the new room hotspot closer so it changes before you would normally scale.
