Running AGS under Japanese Windows XP

Hello,

Working on my first game in AGS and having a good time with it so far. There are, however, a few strange phenomena that, according to a more experienced user also on these boards, are not common.

E.g. I can't "test game" from the file menu. It will start the game but crash it immediately. I have to "setup game" and then "save and run" every time. But even then  3 times out of 10, when I quit the game, it doesn't seem to quit properly and I have to manually "ctrl-alt-del" and "end" the game before I can save my project or test my game again.
Also, running the exe from the compiled folder seems okay, until I quit. Then the game quits normally, I go back to windows and a crash message appears, forcing me to "end" the program.

Now my mate didn't have any of these problems. Could it be because I am running it under a Japanese version of Windows XP? Or is there something more sinister at work?

Any insights appreciated!

J

Hmmm at least I don't have problem with Chinese XP or 95 or ME (just occational misalignments with texts in editor). Did you use any Japanese (double-byted) characters in your game (script, speech texts, etc)? They are not supported and can cause crashes.

No, nothing weird like that. I'm just using all English texts.
As far as I can tell, I7m doing nothing weird.

The "Test game" feature is dodgy on some PC's, we haven't yet been able to work out why. It seems to work fine for most people, but not work for others.

So yes, running it from the Compiled folder is the advised solution.

Can you provide the contents of the crash message?

James Kay

ARGH, it's driving me mad.

There is no actual crash error message, just the usual "Windows encountered a problem. End the program?" followed by one of those Spyware "Report problem or ignore" messages (or whatever the Kanji equivalent is).

I've been getting into deep scripting territory these last two days and, as I'm not a programmer, I need to test extensively. I make a small change, I want to quickly run the game to see if it works properly. But these crashes take up time, especially if I manually (via ctrl-alt-del) have to end the program.

Any clue as to what might be causing this? The only thing I can think of is that it's a Japanese system... Yet playing downloaded AGS games don't have this problem, apparently. Just the one I'm working on.

Pumaman

Hmm, if it's just your game causing the problem, could you upload the exe somewhere so that I could take a look?

James Kay

I might ask you to check out the .exe later this week when I get a chance to upload it, but I sent a previous version, with which I experienced the same problems, to a mate to have a look at and he didn't have that problem at all. So I actually doubt it's the .exe,

I'm no programmer, so laugh at me if you will, but could there be something in the AGS code concerning shutting down the program that is incompatible somehow with a Japanese system?

Pumaman

It's possible, I have no idea what the differences are on the Japanese XP.

Gilbert

But that's a bit odd, it never failed on me in a Chinese, maybe I'll try it with native Japanese WIN95 at home (it's no XP tho).
