I've recently redone the captain from my upcoming game:

This is Captain Anyway of the starcruiser 'USS Unreliable'. This character is supposed to be 39 years old. She's wearing some kind of futuristic (tight) jumpsuit. The subtle shading is intentional.

Now, I haven't drawn many female bodies yet so I'm wondering what you guys think about it? This character isn't supposed to be sexy, but also not the opposite. She's not too young anymore, remember?

Comments please!  :D

Update: Thanks to many suggestions here, I present version 2 of the Captain:

I changed her legs, thighs and hands. I decided not to add grey hair because she's too vain  ;) She'll probably dye her hair when it'll become grey.

Totoro

Fits the discription very well. Does not lack female advantages, but remember I am 24  ;)

Pessi

Looks really nice! Something I'd expect from you. :)

As you don't want her to look very sexy, I suggest making the breasts a bit smaller. No, wait. What am I saying? Make them bigger.

I think you could make her look more regular by changing her legs a bit. They're very muscular and kind of manly at the moment. Perhaps something like this?

Finally, one thing that kind of looks weird is how her hands are of different size. I don't think perspective could cause that great a difference. They don't stand out though, so you might as well keep them the way they are. Just something I noticed after watching the image a while.

The overall look though is great. The style is very consistent and professional. Keep it up! Still can't wait to see the game. :)

Dood ... I love the look of your work!

I did a quick paintover.

1) I didn't think she looked old enough.  So I added some grey to her hair, but you could also just add a few lines to her face (if you don't like the grey hair) around her mouth and/or next to her eyes.  That would 'age' her a little more as well.  Captains don't age well ;)

2) The left hand (the more visible one) jumped right out at me looking a little odd.  So I altered it slightly.   I made it a little smaller and changed the angle of her finger.

Feel free to use/modify as you see fit!

Awesome work man!  Your game is 1 of my top 5 'most anticipated' games!

Looks pretty cool. Of what I've seen of your game (screenshots), it should fit in nicely. I agree with Pessi about the legs, though. Other than that, I like it.

TheYak

Very skillfully done but I gotta agree with the legs thing.  It seems that they're curvaceous in all the wrong places for a woman, giving them a manly or even otherworldly look.  I think a few grey strands might be nice but in Darth's paintover, I would assume that she's got her hair shaved on the sides (a la main character from The Dig).  I think you only get massive greying above the ears with hair that's short on the sides.  some gray strands, possibly more concentrated in some areas might be a bit more natural-looking.  Of course, if the character is in its 30's, gray might not be necessary at this point.

Other ways to convey age/unsexyness might be to add more wear & tear to the face.  You wouldn't want to add lines since the smooth style you've got going is excellent.  However, some shading in the right places can give her some smile-lines, etc.  Based upon the shadows of the outfit, neck & hair, more face-shadows would fit well anyway.  Another thing that I associate with slightly older not-too-attractive women is excessive make-up.  Some blue eye-shadow would do wonders in this respect, IMO.

As always, very impressive work!

I don't think a 39 year old woman would have grey hair. 49 maybe. But nice "hand" job though, much better fitting.

Erwin_Br

I have changed her legs to Pessi's example (thanks, Pessi!) so they're less manly. I might change them again just slightly to make them a teeny bit more curvacious then they currently are.

I also changed her hand (thanks, Darth!), which looked kinda weird before.

i think your work shows personality, that's very good.

what i would change:
- move the mouth more to the right. having it further to the left than the nose gives her sort of a "primitive" look (imo!).
- get rid of the white between the pupils and the eyelashes.
- raise the hips a little. the waist looks a bit too long on her left.
- make the breasts a little more discreet (or less conspicuous ? i have bad vocabulary) :)

Igor

It looks great! I like modifications :)

Btw, if you want to make her look older (even though, i don't think that's necessary at all), just add subtle wrinkles under her eyes.

loominous

Some modifications:

Hope it s clear. Nice style.

Not a helpful post but loominus, you hypnotized me for a good 10 seconds, quite odd that.

Loom's edit does make a couple improvements as far as consistency.  Unfortunately, it also seems to knock 5 or so years off the char's age.

Impressive work, loominous! The new shoulders, legs and hips are fantastic. I also like her new face, but as Yakspit said; she looks too young now so I'll probably leave it like it is. Maybe I'll even add some shadows/lines beneath her eyes as Igor suggested.

I'll post a new version of her soon :D

IMHO, I prefer the original body to the newer paintovers. It just seems to have more of a comic flair. Although Loominous' modification of her face looks like a good direction to take it.
