Kings Quest II-the castle crucifix HELP!

I made it through the swamp only to discover that I don't have the crucifix. I talked to the monk until he started to pray again. He did give me  something I'm sure. I got the page from the bible and I saw the
wolves come and he talked to them. Did that silly elf maybe take it?
Do I have to go back through the swamp??I'm doomed!!
