Hm, I've been working on this one for a while now - I don't know how many times I tried to get this one to like I wanted it to before I finally got to a look that I felt was right. This is supposed to be the apartment of the main character, Kevin, newly graduated art student and careless youngster. A bit dirty and dusty, in other words...

My main concern is the light - Basically: Is the picture to damn dark?
I do want it to be a bit shady and dark, so I can't make it fully lit either.
Any suggestion is as always, very, very welcome!

Also, here's a new edit of Kevin's main sprite. I realized that the skin tone in the old one made him look like a cheese doodle... :) Hehe...

The apartment ...

It's very crisp and clean lines.  It's nice.  The only thing that jumped right out at me was the bottom of the bed.  It seems to be off somehow.  The problem is that I can't place what's wrong with it ...

Maybe make it angle up towards the wall slightly?  I'm just not sure.  It's a tricky perspective.

All in all I think it's got a nice look to it.  Maybe add some texture to the floor and a few little details around the place (posters on the wall, etc.)

The character ...

I think he looks cool!  The pants are 'flood' pants.  They're riding a little high over his ankles.  Which looks okay if they're supposed to be that way (and bell bottoms)

Maybe add some contrast to the face ... the details seem a little washed out (at least on my monitor)

I like the background. A tecnique wich will probably work for you to reach the 'shady and dark' look is to let the window cast some light on the floor and bed, it works all the time...
here's what I mean:

just mask out the area you want to lit, either lighten up the masked area or invert the mask and darken it....

hope this helps...

I like the character, the face in particular has a real sense of simple deliberate style to it.

I'm at school, and the brightness and gamma on this monitor is terrible, so I can only see the light parts of the image. However, I'm pretty sure I noticed a perspective problem with the window (Correct me if I'm wrong)... The top of the Windo should be slanted upwards, not downwards, as it gets close to the edge of the image. I made a quick edit to show you what I mean.

Note, this isn't the best edit in the world, as I was forced to use Paint Shop Pro 5 at school (I haven't used PSP in about 5 years), but you should get the idea.
I make music.

Sorry for not answering to your replies, but I was a bit occupied... :)

Darth:
You may be right about the bed, but since my perspective skills never seem to improve, I'm not really sure if I can get it to look better... I will try to fix it, though...

About the char:
I made his nose a bit darker now, even though I think it would have looked nice in-game anyway... Still, couldn't hurt...
And yeah, his pants are supposed to have flares... :)

Glad to hear you like the style!

Kaaz:
Yeah, that's a really nice idea - I will try to add that in some way. It looks great in your picture!

Widdly:
Thanks! Glad to hear you like it!

Berserker:
Aye, I think you got something there - I did an edit of the window and some other stuff, but it still needs some tweaking.

Yes,you could make the room a little lighter.Use happier colors maybe. But the last edit (sry for saying this) look like the person who lives there, came home drunk one night, took a spray can and started to spray the walls and floor  ;) .Dont get me wrong. It's nicely done but maybe a little too much wildness!  :P
