My beloved AGS is broken and i can't bear it any longer

For some reason my Pc no longer allows me to open AGS, it gives me a fatal error whenever i try to open it, even if i shut down restart and go on, it still appears.

Heres the error (The stuff in the background was just the stuff i was doing in photoshop when i took this screeny)

Help me! I've made all this stuff for a game and i cannae stand it noo more!

Does it crash right on start up without even showing that welcome to AGS startup dialog?
What if you extract AGS archive to some other folder (ex: C:\agstest) and try to run it from there?

Pumaman

Have you got any plugins installed? If so, can you try removing them from the editor folder and see if that helps at all?

As Scorpiorus says, how far does it get? Do you see the splash screen? Do you see th e"Welcome to AGS" dialog?

Scuthbert

Woah! Well Done!

Thanks a lot scorpiorus, i tried moving the files to a new folder and it worked! Might have been one of the templates, in case you were wondering it didnt even show the splash screen.

My pc is set to cookies, Sigh, i guess ill just have to stick to replying to ppl now!

Scorpiorus

I'm glad it works, but...

Have you extracted the archive into another folder (thus installing a pure copy of AGS) or just moved all the existing content from the old folder to a new one?

You used some templates but did you use some of the plugins as well?

Out of curiosity, couldn't you remember the old path AGS was located at? :P

I copied the main AGS files, non of the templates or plugins etc... so i just copied AGSEDIT.exe etc...

Nope.

I have no idea what you are talking about.. so I'm just gonna say... yes?

I meant a path something like C:\somefolder\editors\AGS

The thing is I happened to encounter a similar error and I got rid of it by moving AGS to another folder. It didn't crash on startup but when I chose an inventory GUI and only with games at hi resolutions. And I can't replicate it now. Hmm...

..

Im Ultra Happy Now... I can log in again!

I knew the path to AGS... I still dont get what your asking... NVM... Thanks for all your help anyway... I can get back to my game.. talking of which, i just posted some stuff 4 it in the critics lounge... [/shameless plug]

Pumaman

Could you please post the full folder name of where AGS was installed before, as Scorpiorus asked. The reason for asking is so that I can try and track down why the problem happened, and fix it for a future version.

..

oh sure

C:\Windows\Start Menu\Games\ags\agsedit.exe

But it works again now at that path for some reason..

Pumaman

Strange - must have been some other file you had in the folder. You don't still have a copy of the old folder, do you?

..

Its still exactly the same as b4.. i just copied all the files to a new folder, deleted all but the Vital AGS FILES and then it worked, and today i clicked on the link in the old folder by accident and it worked...

Strange...

Yeah, strange and that's exactly what I was encountering too. The difference is it wasn't on start up but when choosing an inventory GUI in the gui editor. Not sure if it's realted at all (because it carshed quite randomly) but clearing AGS recent games regestry entries (but still running from the old folder) seems like to temporary solve the problem for me. Then again I'm not sure and it might be just a coincidence.

Pumaman

Hmm, well I can see that it might crash if you loaded a game with a folder name longer than 200 characters (which I'll fix), but I doubt you had a folder that long. Strange.

Scorpiorus

Yeah, folder name was about 50 characters long. Together all the recent game strings took about 200 but since they are separate strings that shouldn't be a problem.
