Sigh.

I'm doing my Mom's college computer project my college computer project, and it needs to be in by Tuesday, but I'm leaving this evening until Wednesday, so really it needs to be done today.

I'm a little stuck.

Seems that my Mom I fall asleep during ECDL class, so she I have no idea what to do. I have completed most of the project since this morning... the Microsoft Word part, which I am familiar with. However, I'm stuck as regards Mail Merge. I have never used it, or been taught how to use it, and I've never heard of it or had any need to use it.

Here's the question;

Write a database as a data source for the above document, which consists of six different lecturers. The information of the database to be stored, for each lecturer, is:

    Title
    First name
    Last name
    College
    Department
    Address
    Specialist.

Could somebody please, please, PLEASE begin to explain to me what the hell I'm supposed to do?

It sorta sounds like some mailing list or something... but I'm not sure if that is it.

I've done a quick google for it (google is your friend) and came up with these:

http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/2002/articles/wdSimpleMailMerge.aspx
http://www.keysolutions.com/NotesFAQ/howmail.html
http://www.depts.drew.edu/acadtech/TRC/Outlines/wordmailmerge.htm

I haven't checked any of them... because I don't wanna do your project for you... :P

And I don't want to do my project for me either.

Especially as it's not mine.

All MS Office applications can work between each other in different ways. If you don't know how to make a database in access, you're kind of screwed, because you need to do that and then pull the data from it into the Word document.

Step one: Create new Access database
Step two: Create table in design view
Step three: Fill in each row with the titles of the columns
Step four: Switch to datasheet view with the first button on the toolbar
Step five: Fill in the datasheet with the information with the seven lecturers, under the proper headings.

Once the data is in the Access document, then you can create a Letter/Envelope that has placeholders (like *Title* *First Name* *Last name*) instead of the actual data, and the blanks are filled in with whatever was in each row of the Access table. That's how credit card companies send you what seem to be personal letters.. they write a personal letter with blanks for your name, and a database draws the data for thousands of people.

The MS Word help system will walk you through it, it's more efficient than me anyways.

Has anyone explained to your mother that the point of HER being given exercises to do is so that SHE learns how  to do it?

If she's like my mom, these might be the only computer terms she knows:

On
Off
Keyboard
Mouse
Solitaire
That one thing that does ___ .

My mom used to fall asleep in class too. She got fired from the job she was training for.  ::)
