The guy below is my first attempt at doing a sprite - what else can I do to this monk to make him look normal?

Thanks.

Moox

his left hand is to straight for being that far back, bend it some

Phemar

Wow, that looks cool. Maybe convert it to a gif so we can all see it better. But for your first sprite that is pretty good.

Character with long robe? Clever ;), walkcycle making will be easier. Good work.

You're using too much and/or dark colors on his face, so there's difficult to get his expression on face. I think that making it clearer would give him more personality.
Then again, sprite with many colors is brave attempt, and not everyone is willing to animate so hard.

Draw a stickman onto him for a test to determine his real anatomy. Right now, hands are a bit wrong and way his foot is bent, reminds me Disney characters.
Hands should start from shoulders, not torso, like right hand is.

Still, It seems to become a really fine character. Few fixes and...

Hi!  :D

I have make an example to show you how your character should be:

At the beginning, a sketch:

then, to enrich the sketch with more completions:

Bye!!

Thanks guys.

LostTraveler, I'll fix the hand when I get home tonight.

Zor, why a .gif? That's the first drawing I've done. There's no animation yet.

InCreator, I hadn't even thought of the long robe thing as being a "cop out". :D I'd just wanted to do a murder mystery with monks like The Name of the Rose. I'll have a shot at reducing the number of colours - maybe make him a little friendlier looking. The foot is so Disney, now that I look at it again.  ::)

FantomeLeCheikh, wonderful sketches. That certainly gives me some ideas.

Jpg's pretty much mess up the whole quality of the pic, gifs are the perfeect type for sprites. However converting it to gof now may not make a difference if it's originally saved as a jpg. If you used Photoshop of PSP, or something else with it's own filetype, you may have a file of that type to convert to gif.
Also, you can't use jpg's or gif's (i think) in ags, just bmp, png(? not sure), and pcx.

That's a great character you have there! I don't see why his foot is pointing upwards, though, unless it's a first frame of a walkcycle.

I love characters in long robes/cloaks/jackets/coats/etc.. :)

P.s. Where are you from?

hehe... cool. I've been playing with the thought of making a "The Name of the Rose" adventuregame for a while now...
actually it's not cool! you're stealing my idea! ;)
But over to some c&c:
As many people have pointed out already the quality of jpeg images are a bit bad, so it's hard to give some definite c&c. my main problem is that his right arm seems to come out of his stomach. it also seems like the two arms are different in size. and the feet, but that has been said. keep it up! or not... ;)

A game based on the book, inspired by the book, or the same style of setting as the book?

YOke

inspired by. i was thinking about using William and giving him a new mystery to solve. The setting is awesome and is a real treat for basing games on :)

Yes. I sound exactly like Taggart.  :P

I, being a big Umberto Eco fan, chose Abulafia as it is the name of the computer in his novel Foucault's Pendulum.

Okay, I've been playing about with PSP rather than MS Paint and, for the first time ever I seem to have produced something that's alright. Not perfect, I know.  :-\

Any comments or feedback on this new monk?

Thanks.

Two:
1) Why are you posting an image six times bigger than area you want critics about?
2) Looks cartoonish. I thought that monks walk silently and with smaller footsteps. Well, since I don't know how serious your game will be, I don't say anything about it. But for a serious one, make feet move less. (Cover smaller area with a step)

Ben

Looks good. It has a more stylized, cartoony look than the first, which I like, and the arms are defined much more clearly. The hands could be sharpened up a bit, but other than that the anatomy works..

And please, the next time you post a sprite, use GIF or PNG.. They really do have better quality for this type of artwork. JPG compression creates blurred edges and makes it harder to make out details. JPG is really only meant for photos..

I'll use a .png then as everytime I try to convert to .gif with either MS Paint or PSP7 it leaves the image with reduced colours and speckled. Sorry, I never realised that a .png could be uploaded.

I've fixed the image's size.

I'll also have a shot at reducing the length of the steps he appears to be taking.

- Some part do look blurred (could be compression) like the shoulder, hands and feet....
- His rope belt is to pixelated...I'd go for a antialiased brush for that...same goes for his beard and haircut...they stand out to much now...
- If he's supposed to be a funny kind of guy...keep that walk...It realy made me laugh...in a possitive way...realy adds character...I'd love to see the complete cycle...

I'll look up anti-alias, too.  ;D

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Just learnt masks today.  ::)
