AGS crushes

Well I experience some problems with AGS the last few days.
First it takes a looong time to compile the .exe file. And also when I want to test my game the mouse cursor freezes it looks like something is loading but actually nothing happens until a blue windows' error screen appears and I have to reboot my computer.

I suspect two things for possible reason for this - first i accidently added 30 dialog options... And secondly there may be some problem with the MI2 Template

And I want to ask about somthing else - how can I make the main character die?

..

To make the player character die just animate his death and then cut to a 'you died' room or something. Or if you want the character to die and then a new character to take over just change the player character.

The Mi2 Template normally works fine for me, you may have made some alterations without realising.

The exe could take time to compile depending on the number of rooms, sprites etc you have.

What computer are you running?

How large is your game's EXE file?

Are you using the latest version? v2.6 SP1 fixed a bug which could cause long load times and out of memory errors in some games.

LorD

Well the PC shoudn't be a problem because only about a week ago everything worked just fine. I've downloaded my AGS at the end of April. This is the latest version, right?
But now I remember something else. I made my own font with some program I downloaded - Fontedit. I have tried it in the game.
Can this be the reason why there are such problems?

And isn't there really an option for deleting empty dialog options... ??? And rooms by the way.

Pumaman

That's a possibility - if you're using a font which AGS doesn't understand for some reason, it could well cause these problems. Try removing the font from your game (with the Reset Default Fonts button) and see if it starts working again.

How large is your game EXE file?

LorD

Well I removed the font but still no diference...Ã,  :-\
The EXE file is 1.3Mb

I'm planning on removing everything AGS related and reinstalling the program. But of course it will be good if there are other ways of solving the problem ::)

Try removing every single custom made things exept the characters and sprites. It might solve your problem.

EDIT: Err, that is just crazy, what files did you add and did you delete the Compiled folder?
Moving at superhigh speed getting to the planet called Earth. But it is boxed in white......thing.....

Pumaman

Can you upload your game so that we can take a look and maybe figure out the problem?

LorD

I deleted everything and then get back AGS. Nothing happened. Still the same problems. But then I was looking through the options and found somewhere option to compile DOS exe. And now I've got almost no problems with slowing down and crushing. Only the Setup to the games is not running quite stable but it's not such a big problem. However I found out that it's not just my game. All the other AGS games that have Windows compiled exe slow down and crush.

Well I think I can work with DOS exe but are there some serious disadvanatages except not being able to test the game in the Editor?

Pumaman

Do you have this problem with non-AGS games?

It's worth re-installing DirectX in case it has got messed up somehow - it sounds like it's crashing when AGS tries to initialize the display mode.

LorD

Actually not just with games - as you said that I remember that even my image-opening program has the same problems. (not so serious though)
And that means that you're probably right about the display thing. I shoud try to reinstall DirectX then  ::)

LorD

I had DirectX 8.00 now I have installed DirectX 9.00 and AGS still does not run.
Any other suggestions?

Hmm, make sure you have the latest AGS version. Try going to the game setup and disable both the digital sound and the music, then try running a windows-compiled game and see if it makes difference.

It's also worth making sure your graphics card drivers are up to date.
