Anyone else have problems with the standard GameCube Controller?

I managed to pick up a cheap GameCube and a couple of games in the recent WHSmith Megasale, but I've noticed a couple of issues with the analogue controller when compared to the PS2 - am I getting old, or becoming a complete muppet?

The pad seems very plasticy and 'toy-y' when compared to the PS2, but more importantly it appears to be slow and unresponsive - you make a move with the pad, and there is a noticable gap before your character responds (This is in both Wave Race, Zelda and the Start up screen).

At the same time your characters also seem 'over-sensitive' with anything more than a very minor tilt causing them to shoot off in extreme directions.

- Has anyone else experienced this?
- Are Nintendo pads just like this - can the responsive be improved with 3rd party pads?
- Is my pad faulty?

Cheers boys & girls!

The only analogue buttons on the gamecube contoller are the shoulder buttons (not sure if its all 3 or just the 2 grey ones)

I've had my GameCube for almost two years now, and I far as I know, my controllers - which have been heavily used by my friends and I -  have always been responsive and fast. Some games are just naturally slow, but I've surprised to see Zelda as one of them. Zelda games are usually very receptive, and since my Wind Waker game was, yours should be as well.

Did you buy new GameCube contollers, or did you buy them "previously-enjoyed"? If you bought them used, then I suggest you get brand new controllers; the previous owner obviously used the controllers quite a bit or perhaps they dropped them on the floor one too many times.

As for the "toy-iness" of the controller, I think that's the way it's supposed to be.

I think its your controls, I have Zelda and have had my gamecbue for a few years and trust me, I dont look after it as much as I should, but its still in working order.

yeah you might have a problem with your controllers. I play alot of soul calibur 2, a great fighting game for any console, and the controls have to be of quick response when your fighting anyone. it could be the pad but it would suck if it was a problem with your cube :(

I haven't had any gripes about the controllers... (maybe some about the system... or the selection of games for the system...)
Watch, I just killed this topic...

Mr Jake

The games are better than xbox's orginial selection (all driving and a few FPS), admitedly they are getting better..

It made me laugh when they said they made the original controls to make you feel like you are driving a car :D

You needed two mates just to play single player  :-[

The only problem i'm having with my gamecube controller is that its collecting too much dust.

I bought my gamecube last summer, but i barely ever play it.Ã,  I like the system, but i just don't have enough games for it.

I have owned a PS2 for a couple of years now, and recently bought an Xbox (last week), and my poor little gamecube just sits on the floor waiting for the moment i actually plug it in again.

Oh, and for the Xbox.Ã,  Morrowind is an amazing game.

Are you using a Wavebird (that's the wireless one) or a regular controller? The Wavebird can be unresponsive, like you describe, when you're getting interference.
I think the GameCube controllers are great, probably my favourite controllers out there.

Mr Jake

Gamecube controlers are really nice, they fit like right into your hand..... Dreamcast ones were good aswell

The gamecube controller is awesome. I find it the most comfortable out of  the latest consoles. Too bad alot of the developers have decided not to make games for the gamecube. Its a shame.

Our controllers are in good condidtion, and we got them second hand. I would say that there is something wrong with yours if they are doing what you are describing.

Hmm,
Maybe it's just that the dead spot in the centre of the analogue stick is larger than you're used to.
I'd say the GC pad is the most ergonomic. It's certainly very different to the PS pad though.
Don't even think about third party pads - they are without exception garbage.

Thanks for the responses guys,

Yes the GameCube & Controller are brand new, but I might pick up a second controller anyway (I'll need it for two player games, and it gives me something to compare againsr).

As Steve says, it could just be I'm not used to the dead spot of the analogue stick.

Thanks again

Matt

Well I guess once you get used to it, I think you will find it very comfortable indeed.

Yeah, I got no problems with my joypad. I'm also waiting for a few new games to come out, too. I'm not interested in sports titles, and Gamecube does have a sparse release schedule, I must admit.

However, Zelda looms ever closer XD

auhsor

Heh, I'm still waiting for my bother to buy Zelda:tWW. I keep telling him that its like the best game on the system. And we've had a gamecube for like a year now. Maybe I should just get a job.
