We don't need oil anymore. We have about 2 or 3 alternate sources of power for cars, let alone power for our homes. Hydrogen fuel cells are being worked on, and we already have electric hybrid cars out there. Instead of using oil burners, we could use more efficient electrical water heaters, etc. But the oil companies are too rich (money-wise) to stop now, not until we've used up all the oil in about 40 years or so.
