Hi,

I've been trying to make my metal wheel look like it's spinning really fast. So far the best i've come up with is the gif below. It's suppose to be spinning clock wise very quickly so i've tried to blur it in some places.
Does it look like it's spinning? Any ideas to improve or anything to critic?

Thanks ,

Iwan

SSH

It's impossible to show something moving faster than half the sample rate, so at 40 frames a second, you can only show a speed of 20 frames a second (or 120rpm) also, that will look pretty rubbish so 80rpm is your probable maximum.Faster speeds will simply look like the wheel is going backwards, or slower. However you might like to try the follwoing tricks:

1) start the wheel slowly and then show it speeding up, alowing the aliasing to occur when it reaches that point
2) as the spinning overtakes the sample rate, any colours and shading irregularities (other than shadows) on the surface will blur into each other, so that dark bit that is moving round will blur completelyt around the centre. However, the viewer will not really notice this unless they see the speeding up in (1) above.

Thanks SSH. Thats a great help ,especilly the first trick.

I think it looks decent enough already - except one one frame there is a black outline that appears and then disappears....

In regaurds to SSH's idea, add sound. Sound will not only make it seem like its spinning fast but it will also add a cool dangerous feel to it. Think of an airplane prop starting. I'm sure you can find, or make, a sound like that.

It looks like it's spinning, stopping for a millisecond, turning, stopping, turning, stopping etc.

I agree with zor. I think it's because of that infamous black outline.

I remeber something I learnd once in physiks. If you want to make this wheel as it is spinning clockwise very fast you have to make the picture as if the wheel is spinning not clockwise. To explain what I mean: The human eye can't see fast enough to see get ervery singel picture of a real spinning wheel. We just realize some pictures. If you look on a car starting to drive and it's getting really fast, you will realise that it looks as if ist is sinning in the right direction   (the same direction the car is moving) but then it looks as if the wheel slows down and then it's spinning in the opposite direction. Hope that helps.

Thank everyone for all the help. I'll fix it and post it again if i need more help,

If you want it to look like it's moving REALLY fast, you may want to consider stretching it (horizontally, or maybe even diagonally) a bit.

The thing is, that it looks like you did it with frames and not animating. It just spins for a cycle and then stop and there is that black outline.

I think the black line is to make it seem like it's spinning. To me it looks fine, there's an illusion that makes it look like it's spinning in both directions depending on how you look at it, which might look odd if something is spinning on it and the wheel is going the other way... Dunno.
