A movie that steals way to much from the japanese animation genre is The Matrix 1 and 2.  It pissed me off a bit really, but the Animatrix got released so they are giving homage to the style that it borrowed so heavily off.

Shattered Sponge is right, I found that the best anime animation examples I've seen, were in “Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade” if it wasn't for the fact it was animated, you could've sworn they used live film.

Since this topic is back again, I just want to say once again how much I hate most of the titles that get mentioned in threads like these. Fuck bloody Manga Entertainment for bringing out the shithouse stuff for westerners to see and giving Japanese animation this image. My god, Ninja Scroll >_< ARGHHHH!!! My spine and internal organs are trying to escape my body just at the thought of it.

(OK, I'm over it now.)

Barbarian

If you're a RPG fan, you might enjoy "Record of Lodoss War". 13 Volumes in the series. I thougt it was really good, and it was nice to see how the character's abilities continued to improve as the series progresses.  I found the overall story is somewhat similar to Lord of the Rings in many ways (but not a clone of LotR).

Another suggestion (if you've not already seen it), is to watch the classic "Akira" movie. A bit of a strange story overall, but really interesting. It starts off almost like it's about rival biker-gangs and such, but then it turns into something completely different and gets much deeper and as the movie progresses.

For a fun senseless violent anime, I also suggest "Fist of the North Star"  (but don't get the terrible live-actor version which was made a few years after the anime version).

And, one more I highly recommend:
Dagger of Kamui (Kamui no Ken),  a.k.a. "Revenge of the Ninja Warrior", "The Blade of Kamui". I think this movie is  a real masterpiece . A historical fantasy set in Meiji-era Japan. Hounded by the sinister Bishop Tenkai, Jiro wanders northern Japan and America, trying to uncover his past and the secret of the dagger he carries with him.  Violent, sometimes magical and fairly serious historical drama.
Conan: "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!"
Mongol General: "That is good."

I just noticed Spirited Away isn't in here.
Why isn't Spirited Away here?
Spirited Away should be here.

I don't know, I thought that despite all it's flaws, Ninja Scrolls wasn't that bad of a movie. I mean, maybe the repeated rapings were a bit much, but the Japanese always seemed a bit "looser" about that type of stuff.

I agree with Barbarian, Akira is a pretty decent movie. It's kind of weird, but South Park seems to like that one (The trapper keeper episode really draws from it). Also, I saw that Fist of the Northstar live action on Sci-Fi channel. Wow, that was crappy. Almost as bad as the live action Street Fighter movie with Jean Claude.

Tenchi Muyo is kind of a weird series, so I suggest just watching the movies if you want to like it.
Galaxy Express 999 is old, but I rather like it.

From what I've heard, NGE is almost like a crack induced fantasy, but I've never watched it.

No big anime expert, but I definately like it - I'd just like to say that Rouroni Kenshin (Samurai X) is very much worth a look.
The TV-series is good, but very long, as I've understood, and the motion picture is also good, (And similiar style-wise to the series) but the masterpiece is the two OVA:s that is out there; "Trust" and "Betrayal".

Superb animation, brilliant music, a brilliant and breathtaking story and lots of violence, but in the most ugly and un-glorifying way there is.
So far I haven't met anyone who hasn't gone absolutely dead quiet in the beginning and the end of it, because of the impact it creates.

Ah, cripes, two fanatical ramblings in one day? Oh well...

I've never seen any anime TV shows and I'm no expert on Japanese animation in general, but have to say holy christ does Hayao Miyazaki make some incredible movies! Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away are truly the best films... OF ALL!

I'm rather fond of Slayers and El-Hazard.  I recommend those.
