Here's something I drew for fun, and to see if I could do it. All totally done in MSPaint, w/ reference pictures. Can I get critique on it?

Subject 1: Spotted/Brown Hyena.

big brother

I think I speak for all of us when I say that this may be the most disturbing image I have been exposed to all day. And the fact that reference photos were involved only makes it worse.

I am particularly confused by the two dimples on either side of the gaping mouth on the creature's abdomen.

I think that's just a really big belly button.
Crazy!  :D

Are you attracted to guy's wearing animal costumes??? Are you a closet or a proud furry?

ugh...

That sprite is very well constructed, but the subject matter is a bit offputting...

What subject matter? It's an animal person. What's off putting about that?

Man why is everyone so mean lately?

and I don't know if you're kidding but Big Brother... I totally wouldn't expect that from you, is that any kind of critique of the work? Or did you just feel like putting someone down? http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?topic=15031.40#msg185962 this should apply to every post not just ones that make your jaw drop...

Scavenger, it's very good and the only thing I think I'd do differently is try added shading to his face. it's all over his stomach and chest and arms but not his head. Maybe you tried and it looked bad but I think it'd pull his snout out more. He could be confused as a teddy bear as he is now i think.

Are you still working on a game? I remember you were going for Discworld style art last time and this is better than the Discworld art. That game had such... I dunno, they all looked like they were hastily made out of clay and they were poorly drawn. This isn't.

I really like the shading! You've really caught the shapes of a fat person. The only problem I see is when the body goes over into head. The brown area looks really flat compared to the rest of the image. Maybe some shadows there would define the face more?

Are you planning to make a game in this style?

Cerulean

The arms are rather long. I think the hands should appear at least halfway into the frame.

It's an unappealing body type but accurately portrayed as such, so I think we can assume he's not meant to be attractive.

To give people some background here, hating on furries is how adolescent skater-wannabe twitch-gamers with their jeans around their ankles greet each other. They consider it their leet membership card, and bring it up even when it's not relevant to the topic at hand just to make sure everyone knows they're trendy little hateboys.

Scavenger

Okay! I've taken everyone's critique into consideration, and created a second version, with:
-More Shading on head,
-less mutated belybutton
-shorter arms
-The highlights in his hair are more realistic

Big Brother: Aww, c'mon. Rotten.com MUST have something more disturbing than an overweight hyena-person! I mean, really, you must be exaggerating.

Pirate Jack: Animal costumes scare me. It's like.. AGH! Run AWAY!! when I see one. Why do you ask?

Cerulean: Yup. You got it in one. He ain't s'posed to be pretty.

mätzyboy: Alas, no, no game in this style. It takes too long! Although...

Eric: If the snout isn't fixed on this version, how do you suggest I do it? It's always my failing in front-views.

mätzyboy

Looking good!

I preferred the original arms though, with no hands showing. I believe thats more anatomically correct aswell...

Tiki

I'd say the belly button still looks like a knife wound.  Make it a small little circle thing.   I'm not positive, for I don't study fat people's belly buttons, but I'm pretty sure they look more like a an 'o'  rather than a '____'

Other n that, excellent work

You should make the lines under his boobs a bit smoother. The dark line just stops, it looks a bit silly. Make them go a bit further but in a lighter shade of colour. same goes for the navel.

Actually, having been at the beach with a person in exactly this kind of shape (my evil, disgusting, large step-father) often they don't appear to have a bellybutton at all, just a large crease.  Something in there is still connected to their insides, or something.
That's like looking through a microscope at a bacterial culture and seeing a THOUSAND DANCING HAMSTERS!

Your whole planet is gonna blow up!  Your whole DAMN planet...

This better? Smoothed stuff out and added Anti-aliasing, too.

EDIT: GWAH. I linked the wrong picture.

My, that is an awesome sprite, I really like it.
The only thing I can suggest is making the shading beneath the navel a bit lighter, because it really does make it look like a wound now.

Edit: Ah, now it's good.
And yeah, like Mephistophilis, I believe the arms should be longer.

Mephistophilis

The arms should be longer, like the First picture, and (looking at my own podgy belly) the navel shouldn't be that dark maybe lighten it a bit.

Hm. Disturbing, yeah.
Nice shading, but I'd make shade colors few RGB values closer to skin tone. They're a bit too different/contrasty yet.

If it's a overweight hyena-man, I think you overdid the breasts. At least right one is getting too close to overweight hyena-woman :D, make these dark lines at the bottom of breast longer so they almost meet at the center of the chest, this should do.

Erwin_Br

The shadowing is top-notch! :) I see improvements in your artwork every time you post something new.

Animating such a detailed character could be quite a challenge, but I really love this style of yours. Keep up the good work!
