An exception 0xC0000005 occured in ASCWIN.EXE at
EIP = 0xBFF9B713 (strcpy/strcat); program pointer is +0, ACI version 2.61.747, gtags (0,0)

I got this when I hit the icon to start up 7 Days a Skeptic, i've never had this problem with playing any other AGS games. What should I do?

Gilbert

Have you tried setting up the game with different settings?

Ace Harding

I tried but I still get the same message everytime no matter what I do.

Pumaman

Have you definitely tried:
* disabling sound
* running in a window instead of full screen
* running at 640x400 instead of 320x200

Gilbert

Apart from trying different resolutions, had you tried setting up the game to run in window, or disabling the music and/or sound outputs, etc. ?

The (strcpy/strcat) part in the info was a bit suspicious though...

splooge

Thats right, i tried all the obviouse stuff first because I was really intrested to play it. Ã, After goin through all the setup variations I could make in the winsetup program I even tried changing video and sound setting on my computer manually(changing/lowering vid-res, disabeling sound, ending some processes ect.) but still no go.

I'm currently downloading it again to see if maybe its due to the installer itself. Ã, If that doesnt work, maybe ill try lookin to see if anybody else has a working version.

splooge

I have the exact(well, almost) same error when I try to run Apprentice 2.
only difference is the 0xBFF9BB6B part.  Coincidence?  I tried all the variations of the setup as far as I know but still nada.  However, 7 days did work for me, go figure.
As for condstructive help, I can only suggest what Im doing at the moment.  Im downloading it again just to make sure the problem is/isnt with the installer.  If that doesnt work Im gonna download it again but from a different source if i can find one then burn it and try it on another computer.
Hope you find a solution to your problem beacause I heartily recomend 7 days, it was great.

Do you have the latest version of Apprentice 2? If not, there is a small 500kb patch that will update it for you.

Other than the only reason I can think of why it's not working for you is your computer. Though that's weird, too, because I think it should run on Win98se. I don't know, though, because I use WinXP.

Sonavagun!  I had almost given up hope of playing this game when as a last ditch effort I moved the \app2 directory to the root of my drive d: and voila!

In the words of dr. Frank N. Stien: "Its ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

thing was the directory \app2 occupied was generated by my downloader and it was kinda long "\herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com".  I fugure for some reason, the engine doesnt like directory names with more than 1 dot in them (maybe) or it could be the length and it kinda threw it all in whack.  Kind of a simplistic reasoning I know, but since Dr.Hawkins inst answering my e-mails about this subject I got nuthin the likes of his history of the univers schtick.

To all that had similar error messages like i had (please see first post)
try my solution out, who knows!

Thaks to all who replied, I know I'm gonna love this community.

PS: uh, how do ya close this thing?

Ace Harding

I tried your method with 7 days and it worked! Thanks a million for it.

Pumaman

Interesting ... thanks for telling us the solution.

Do you remember the full path of where it was installed when it didn't work, so I could try and replicate the problem?

I seem to remember something like this coming up a while back, and IIRC it only seemed to affect Win98 and not XP.

splooge

hi Pumaman, the exact directory address was like this:

"D:\downloads\herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com\App2"

Notice the two dots/periods in the second directory name?  As far as I know that was what caused the trouble.  The downloder I used generated it automatically and I thought nothing of it.  The solve I did was just a fluke because I could think of nothing else.

Glad I could be of help, Ace.  Enjoy 7 days, I did!

Pumaman

Hmm strange, I just tried installing it in that directory and it worked fine. Must be some sort of compatibility problem with Win98. I'll add some additional error checks for the future, to try and track it down.

I'm using Win98 so I thought I'd test if it works. I extracted the game into directory 'D:\downloads\herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com\App2', and got the same error message as splooge did. Then I copied the game into 'D:\downloads\herculeaneffort.adventuredevelopers.com' and still got the same error message.

I usually put my games into the directory 'D:\games' and they work fine, so for example I have Apprentice 2 in the directory 'D:\games\Apprentice 2\App2' and it works fine.
