This is for a space-based adventure game. The engine room is for a less-than-spiffy class of starship.

hmm, I think the walls should be alittle bit stained (from the steam, heat, oil, dirty or whatever from the engines).

By less-than-spiffy do you mean falling apart less-than-spiffy or not top of the range less-than-spiffy?

Pstonie

It's supposed to be a new ship, but one that isn't exactly top-of-the-line.

Quite nice, in my opinion you can paint the different walls with different colour brightnesses, so to make the image look less "flat" (as you included some gradient colours already, so you're not going for those simple flat colour style I think, so you can add more dynamics to the colour brightnesses).

Also, you don't really need to scale the picture up before posting (which boosted up filesize a bit), you can just use the forum tag codes to resize the picture automatically ;) , example:

[ img width=640 height=400]http://.....[ /img]

remove the spaces after [ of course.

I think it looks pretty good.

The first thing that jumped right out at me was those 'girders' on the ceiling.Ã,  They look ... off?

The lighting seems pretty consistent.Ã,  Though there are a few areas that appear a little flat (as Gilbot pointed out).

Also there are a few areas that should probably have some shadows that don't (the floor areas by the bed and 'shower' thingee)Ã,

Under the 'shower' thingee hood those shadows should probably extend further down as the light sources are directly above it.

Also, under the hood there, the lighting effects on the wall details look backwards.

I'm only being so picky 'cause I like the image.Ã,  Keep up the good work!

I'd depen the shadows to give the room a bit more contrast.  Thats more of a personal rather then technical suggestion.  I tend like contrasty images.  I really like your use of foreground images, the only other thing would be to add some type of detail/texturing to the walls, but again thats a personal style idea.

I think it looks pretty good! The perspective is not a 100% accurate, but I really like the way you've emphasized the foreground part of the image. Good depth. :)

Yo. Thanks for all the feedback. This project kinda got put on the back burner a couple of months ago to make time for other projects, yet I found myself thinking that it might be a good idea to bring it back again. At this point I have about half of the art done.

So, if you will, more feedback on the below, please:

This is on a space station, in the finished game there will be a number of NPCs walking and standing around here.

Nifty! Can't wait for the game.

Good perspective work!

You really seem to know what you're doing!
One thing I noticed: The colours're quite pale which is actually quite suitable for a serious game. But if your game's a comedy-game you should try to spice things up a bit.

But really, there's nothing to critisize! Those backgrounds are stunning! Hope you can do as good a work with the characters and the story, because then you'll have a great game on your hands!

auhsor

That is good. Hey is must be good if it deserved a post from C in the Critics Lounge.
Its cool, it reminds me alot of Space Quest 5. I'm assuming your putting like stars in the window.

Andail

I think they both look good, but a bit of contrast wouldn't hurt.
I'm strongly suspecting that you used some sort of reference picture for the second background, maybe it's a paint-over?
It almost looks too "perfect"...you could add more hand-drawn elements just to give it some organic feel to it.

Pstonie

Thanks, everyone. I'm glad to hear that it reminded you of SQ5, since that was what I was aiming for when I started doing the art.

This is not a paintover of something real, as far as I remember. I did lineart and then then colouring from a bare image. There is an older version of this image, which I wouldn't show to anyone since everything in it is wrong and it sucks. But it is a flaw in my background art to be too logical, and it's something I'm still trying to remedy.

I slowly started teaching myself to do background art in this style over the run of this project.

Hell, no! You can't call it a flaw to be able to draw things as they would look in the real world. If it's true that the corridor-image isn't a paint-over then it's god-damn brilliant!

DCillusion

The backgrounds look great!!

The only thing you might want to think about is using actual space photos for outer space.  Something fancy, like hubble images.  I've played a lot of sci-fi and many commercial products use space images with hand-drawn backgrounds and no one seems to mind.  Since it's deep background it doesn't contrast the artistic style.

This is just something to think about........I wouldn't even call it a suggestion.  Everything looks great!

Pstonie

Thanks again for all the feedback. And here we go, the last time I'm going to burden you with these:

From 320x200

I've never really felt at ease with this one. Any suggestions/comments?
NOTE: The low-res jagged colour changes that are visible here are from when I wanted to make this a 256 colour game (I'm posting these from my dev forums). I've moved away from that idea and the colour issue shouldn't be in the finished game.

Thanks again, I think I'm going to continue working on this one very soon.

whats the green stuff in the right corner?  (not corner but more side)

I don't see a lot wrong with it.  If you don't like it, maybe it doesn't look busy enough for you.  Try adding some items.

Also, the distant corridor could be darkened OR lightened a bit.

Still looks great!

Tiki

The light gray thingie on the middle-right stands out a bit.  The rest of the image is quite dark, but it is light up like a christmas tree, nearly.  I suggest more shading, or overall darkness.

Other 'n that, top notch work.
