SUGGESTION: Searching through members for skills

I was just thinking, we already have a feature here where we can toggle some icons in our profiles for what skills we have and are willing to use to assist others. What about some way of searching through the members for, say, any that can do voice acting? This would be VERY useful in contacting people, instead of wasting bandwidth with a thread asking for help, or a post in the ACR where not everybody will read it. Is this possible?

Rich, not sure if it's possible, but I think that its a great idea and I back it up completely.
"I wish I could say something classy and inspirational, but that just wouldn't be our style. Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory. Lasts forever."

"These pretzels are making me thirsty!"

dasjoe

it should be possible, after some modding to the search functions.
i suppose chris added either fields to the db, each for one ability, or he has added one field to the db, containing a bitflag, like 110010101110 for example.

and he has to heavily hack the search function. but it is possible, i've done something similar with an other forum about a year ago..
... it's quite easy being the best.

That makes so much sence. If you need someone for a specific task, then you can do a search and get a whole list, followed by their little description. Awesome idea, and it is so much better than the current way.
I just hope that it is technically not too hard to do.

Scummbuddy

I completly agree with the idea. I was recently wondering how to make it easier for people looking for help to find it.

- No, I mean it's really STUCK. Like adventure-game stuck.

And maybe a link to a page they could provide in their sig with examples of their work?

Perhaps, this search feature could link you to their profiles and, in turn, their signatures, so that you could read any more info they mght have, as well as their contact info (or PM them if no email provided or if it's hidden). I'm just waiting for CJ to find this thread and reply.

I support this idea.
Right now, I don't think the assistance-icons are being used at all. And the ACR-thread is a mess, actually.

SSH

The search should show a random selection form all the people who can do a particular thing, otherwise people whose names begin with A tend to get all the appeals for help....

Yeah,  I like the sound of this. Due to the way the forum stores profile fields it's not exactly trivial to add, but I'll look into it.

And while we're on the topic, to everyone who ticked "translation" but didn't mention what languages they speak, a big 'duh' :P

TerranRich

Heh. :P Thanks a lot, CJ, this will come in handy not just for me, but for any game designer out there (all of us, duh :P) who needs help with certan aspects of their games. :)

i hope that the search yields the things that they put in their descriptions.

and could we add to the regular search page, when you go to tick the subforums to search, i find myself always unchecking like all but one, since i remember the subforum it was in, so it would be nice if you could have a check box to check/uncheck the whole subforum, like community, so i dont have to tick, comp, crits, talk and chit chat and such.

is that possible? can it be my future birthday present?

Does the "Check all" checkbox down the button not do a good enough job?

TerranRich

It does for me. Just uncheck it to deselect all.

And don't steal my thread, Scummboy!

:P

Very good idea! CJ will undoubtedly figure out how to implement it, he always does!  :=

I know I'm not crazy, but I can't seem to find the post that was started earlier. There was discussed the idea to be able to search the forums for people that have the selected icons for Offer Your Services', and be able to show the definitions of what they set them to say, such as:

Scummbuddy:
translating -> Brittish to Americanese

this way, we could possible get rid of the "Offer your Services" thread, and just allow people to search for helpers.

If a mod can find the thread, please merge them accordingly. Thanks a bunch, love.

Thanks. Now that this thread is resurrected, I hope CJ will find it easier.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the move, but ever since I'm not able to log in as ecargot. I get the error message:
QuoteThat username does not exist.

Then I try to reregister, and I get:
Quote(escargot) This name is already in use by another member.

Will I have to pick a new nickname? <sniff>
