Searching for JOHN SMITH on the computer produces a fatal exception error and crashes the game --
"An exception 0xC0000005 occurred in ACWIN.EXE at EIP=0x0043CBF1; program pointer is +6, ACI version 2.5.440, gtags (14,2) ..... "

This is a known error - I can't remember whether it was a scripting error or a bug in AGS, but basically the game would need to be recompiled with a newer version of AGS to fix it.

See if you can persuade Chrille to do so
