I have to say this looks intriguing. I have not yet seen the original film, but i trully intend to. Speilberg is a good director, but Cruise..... Cruise is not one of the greatest actors. His range is very limited, this may seriously affect the film. Other than that I'd have to say it looks good. Thanks for bringing the trailer to my attention jetxl.

I've seen all the post-Schindler Steven's films, and I only liked "catch me if you can". A.I. was disturbing, but too sweet for making me dare to say it was crap. Minority for me was crap. Paramount told "War of the Worlds" can be "the film of the decade", but I doubt it. I really hope Spielberg make something good, because if not, he'll dissapear of my "NOWADAYS favourite directors" list.

I really doubt about Cruise too. I really hate his histrionism, I allways see the same military lawyer yelling "I WANT TEH TRUTH!!!!!!11" to Jack Nicholson, no matter if he's a police of precrime or a Samurai... I really think he does not know to act, and I am not a man full of envy against the "handsome Hollywood actor"... I loved Brad Pitt in Troy and Fight Club, for instance.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

I'm impressed Paramount was able to keep this movie out of the radar for so long. I had no idea this movie was in production.

I disagree about Tom Cruise. Watch Collateral, and any opinion of him will change. The man can act, and alongside Tim Robbins in the playbill, you know you've got something great.

I rented the original DVD from the library, and I intend to watch it after I finish my 4th viewing of Revolutions (gets better and better every time.)

This movie does look like it's gonna be grand.

Farl - what about "Saving Private Ryan"?Ã,  You didn't like that? ;)

War of the Worlds could be good ... that trailer is for shit 'cause it doesn't really show you anything, but I'm eager to see more.

I'm a huge fan of Spielberg.Ã,  I didn't really like AI that much, but that was Spielberg taking over for Kubric ... so it was bound to be different (which is was).Ã,  Hook is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I would also have to agree with lgm about Cruise ... he's definately gotten better and more intense.  Not only was he great in Collatoral, but watch Magnolia and The Last Samurai as well.  He was outstanding (in my opinion) in all three films.

I think the reason it was kept off the radar is because the whole production process for this film seems to have been an insanely short one.

I think the project was only officially confirmed about five or six months ago, filming only started in September or thereabouts, and they're still expecting to release the thing in only another six or seven months. Either everything has been incredibly smoothly planned out, or they're rushing it and hoping for the best.

I have to wonder how much the world really needs a modernised, Americanised War Of The Worlds film, though. Isn't that basically what Independence Day was? A faithful adaptation would probably be more interesting.

Either way - here's hoping for a bit of Jeff Wayne action on the soundtrack.

Flippy_D

I liked AI, I must say, although I was quite new to real films at that point.

I'm quite confident this will be a good movie. For Cruise, see Collateral, Magnolia, and that one with SHOW ME THE MONEY! that I can't quite remember the name of.

Anarcho

I think it's a little ignorant to say that because an American is redoing the film it will be "Americanised"...along with the obviously negative connotations you're including in that statement.

Steven Spielburg, while capable of creating crap, is very talented and could pull this off.

This is one of those films that could turn out really good, or really bad.  I'm hoping for the former.  I personally had always hoped that someone would re-make wor of the worlds, though I was never sure if I wanted it set in modern times or not.

The preview doesn't really show or tell me anything, so I guess I'll have to wait.  But I'll definatley catch it in the theater on concept alone.

He... missundesrtood, I wanted to say "Ryan" when I told "Schindler".

I was confused because in other forums a guy was saying Spielberg is not very well seen in socialistic circles. I replies that he is since he filmed... "Ryan". I wanted to say "Schindler" there and "Ryan" here.

They must be as confused as you, Darth.

P.S. Somebody know how to switch on the Jet of the republican jet soldier in "Star wars Battlefront"??? PM please...  :'(

It's nothing to do with an American making the film. It's just when a novel set in Victorian England is relocated to 2005 urban America with an all-American star, I don't think it's out of order to suggest it's likely to be an 'Americanised-adaptation'.

I'm not saying it'll necessarily be bad or dumbed down because of that, just that the change risks turning the story into just another stock 'Aliens invade the US' film.

Anarcho

Oh, i see.  Sorry to get defensive!  But I see your point.  If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the old film set in the US?  I know the book wasn't, but wasn't there a B&W movie made that was set in New Jersey or something?  Maybe i'm thinking of something else...

PaulSC

Yeah, it wasn't b/w but there was a version made in the 50's set in WW2 (I think) America. It wasn't all that great, but it does show that the basic story can be shifted over to the states without too much trouble. It's the modern day setting that bothers me a bit.

Also, I'm not sure how they'll handle the ending. From what I can remember, the way things are resolved isn't very cinematic.

Anarcho, you are correct, there is an earier version of this movie set in the US, and also every year on Halloween, National Public Radio does it as a radio play, using all of there news personallities acting it out as though it's really happening.  It's quite entertaining.
There is also an RTS game based on the book set in victorian england, that is so rediculusly hard  it never became popular.

PaulSC:  yeah, as I recall the aliens end up dying from the common cold.

Spielberg has made some good sifi films, so he the man for the job. He also made some bad ones, though.
Cruise ALWAYS plays that likeble character with struggles. Doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

In the b&w film there were only flying sausers with deathrays, wich were cool in their way, but I hope they're going to use the 3 legged alien tanks with deathrays from the book. The ones that Valve copied in HL2 (HL2 copies movie, hacker copies HL2). And of course the human harverser, because the aliens use human blood for fual.

Hope they do use the anti-cinematic ending, though. And not change it into a "computer virus" or an anthrax missile. I think it's much better if we got our asses kicked and win in the end without the help of the (american)army.
Win a war without an army, now that deep.

BTW this is a teaser. What's the difference between a teaser and a trailer:
A teaser is shorter, doesn't tell anything about the story and is shown far long before the film is ready.

Darth Mandarb

I, too, hope they do the original ending and give them a cold (or something like that) rather than screwing it up and giving them a computer virus (which was already done in Independance Day anyway).

I don't think it'll be a computer virus though ... it looked to me, in the teaser, that it takes place in the 40's era America.

Maybe the Nazis invited the aliens?Ã,  You know how Spielberg likes puttin' those guys in his movies!

Cool.  I'm looking forward to it.

I kinda liked Minority Report.  A.I. made me depressed.
Watch, I just killed this topic...
