HA HA FOOLED YOU IT'S ONLY THE OSCAR NOMINATIONS...

http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2005/oscars

So, what did you think of them? For me, I did an early Best Picture predix in December on another forum. I guessed:

The Aviator
Finding Neverland
Kinsey
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways

I got Kinsey wrong. It ended up being Ray. 4/5 isn't too bad!

As for the winners, I'll guess the following:

Best Pic: The Aviator

Best Director: Scorsese for The Aviator

Actor: Jamie Foxx

Actress: Hillary Swank

Supporting Actor: Thomas Haden Church

Supporting Actress: Virginia Madsen

Original Script: Eternal Sunshine

Adapted Script: Sideways

Lot of good surprises, like the nominations for Hotel Rwanda. A few disappointments, like Paul Giamatti missing out for Sideways.

Why Paul Giamatti isn't worshipped as a god after American Splendor is beyond me.

I've seen 8 of those on the list. I wish to see all of those films

LGM

I want to see:

Sideways
The Aviator
Hotel Rwanda and
Finding Neverland

I really don't care much for the Oscars. If a movie is good, I'll watch it. I don't need some highly-payed snobs telling me what is or isn't.
You. Me. Denny's.

Damn it! When ARE the AGS Award nominations happening?

c.leksutin

wow,  I've never even heard of any of those movies.  I seems like so many other things came out this past years, most of which I've seen.  oh well

But how do you know a movie is good before you watch it?

UH OH! PARADOX!

Couldn't agree more.

2 words ... Pig Vomit ... 'nuff said!

I fell off the face of the planet this year :(

I haven't seen a single one of the pix nominated for best picture.Ã,  And that just makes me sad ... I haven't shlubbed an Oscar Race in years, but this year I did (unintentionally).

I'm going to try and see them before the big night, but I really let myself down this year.

DGMacphee

I've only seen two: Sideways and Finding Neverland. If the Oscars were based on what I've seen so far, Sideways would win it.

What do you think of the performance of Johnny Deep? Overally, in "Neverland" and his chances to win the Oscar? I really hate him when I was a teenager and he was in all the notebooks of the girls of the high school, but now I like him more and more, specially since "Sleepy Hollow"...

I thought Depp was great in Neverland. He carried the film, worked well with Winslet, and matched-up against seasoned actors like Dustin Hoffman and Julie Christie. But, I prefer Giamatti's performance in Sideways. Sadly, he wasn't nominated. Though, he might have a chance next year in The Cinderella Man with Russell Crowe.

As for Neverland itself, I thought it was a good film, but a little too calculated and predictable. The performances and production values were great, but it just seem like every scene was written in a way audiences expect them to be written. Like (SPOILERS):

Spoiler
Everyone loves his play about Neverland in the end. Winslet's character, who was sick through the whole film, dies at the end. Peter hurts his arm, and Winslett's mother blames Depp for it. All was a little too predictable.

I like films with scripts that take you to places where you're not sure they're going to take you. That's how I felt with Sideways. And Sideways ended perfectly, whereas Neverland ended with a not so-subtle conclusion.

Then again, I like endings with a little ambiguity.

EDIT: To answer your question a little better, though, I think Depp will lose to Jamie Foxx. I haven't seen Ray, but am hanging out to. From what I've heard, he nails the performance with a large mallet. Plus, he's scoped up a majority of the critics awards. And he plays a real-life character who is a one of music's greatest (and most charming) innovators. That's why I think he'll win.

EDIT 2: On the subject of movie-related news, read this: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200501/s1289506.htm

About fucking time!

I have two words for you: Morgan Freeman for best supporting actor. I haven't seen Million Dollar Baby, I don't plan to, I don't even care if he's that good in it. Morgan Freeman = greatest person ever. Just look:

Yeah, not much of a year to remember as far as films go for me.

I think I've only seen Kill Bill Vol2, Team America: World Police, & Sideways

And Sideways ended perfectly,

I thought it wasn't sublte enough, didn't leave you with enough possibilities in the after thought.

Spoiler
I was hoping for it to be much crueler.
On another point, I'm surprised it got passed the sensorships over here with the amount of drink driving, with no hint of it being illegal or even frowned upon, totally irresponsible. A decent movie, but hardly oscar material, I guess it's just a lean year.

I haven't seen kill bill vol 2. But I felt asleep in vol.1, when the anime starts. When I opened my eyes I only remember to see flashes of a inmenselly (IMO) lame fight in a restaurant.

Someone had the same feelings about vol.1? and what about 2, better or worse than 1?

*EDIT* Thanks for your opinion about Johnny, Daniel.

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Well, 2 is more story based that 1... and Tarantino doesn't go for the things he went in Kill Bill 1 (the manga bit and the restaurant fight). I think they are hommages to the general action scenes and general action movies, and the whole genre. He doesn't go that way in Kill Bill 2, so you might enjoy it more. What there is of action is much more... to the point and focused. And realistic, if you will
