Timmy, I thought the ending was subtle enough when compared to Finding Neverland where they basically blurt out the subtext of the entire film at the very end. I thought Sideways had such subtle moments throughout the whole film. For example, the discussion between Giamatti and Virginia Madsen about pinot noir was beautiful.

But I just like endings that end early. If the film had continued past the end, it would have been really hokey, and that's how I felt about Finding Neverland.

Well, 2 is more story based that 1... and Tarantino doesn't go for the things he went in Kill Bill 1 (the manga bit and the restaurant fight). I think they are hommages to the general action scenes and general action movies, and the whole genre. He doesn't go that way in Kill Bill 2, so you might enjoy it more. What there is of action is much more... to the point and focused. And realistic, if you will
You mean there are no literal "blood baths" (or showers) with the de-limbed victims having enough strength to walk away after the fight ;D?

Yeah. ;D Though the dialog is as wonderful as ever, the physical action is toned down. It makes for a quite different experience, making the whole Kill Bill a more balanced film. Me, I loved it all!

DG, really? You found that conversation subtle?  I agree with you it was well-written and extraordinarily performed, but I found it to be such a blatant metaphor...but maybe that's just the cynical analyzer in me.

However, I do agree that the ending to Sideways was perfect.  (A comment my friend and I made, however, was how the final answering machine message allowed such long pauses without the machine cutting off...that's the movies for you.  :) )

DGMacphee

I thought it was subtle. Sure, it may seem like a blatant metaphor but it's more subtle then going, "Hello Virginia Madsen. I am like Pinot Noir because I'm very thin-skinned and bitter."

"Oh, but Pinot Noir makes good wine, just like you're a good person, Paul Giamatti!"

"Okay then let's sex!"

Okay, my final picks, after seeing all the films:

Best Pic: The Aviator -- I'm going with my gut here. I think the Academy votes for scope. They could vote for Million Dollar Baby, but I think they're more likely to go with this one. Having said that, I think Million Dollar Baby will win a couple of acting awards.

Best Director: Scorsese -- Once again, going with my gut. I heard nearly everyone say it's going to be Eastwood, but once again I think Scorsese aimed a lot higher that Eastwood did.

Best Actor: Jamie Foxx. Nuff said.

Best Actress: Swank. Nuff said: Part Deux.

Best Sup Actor: Morgan Freeman. My guess is they're going to give it to him. I haven't seen Closer but I think Clive Owne is Freeman's main competition. Freeman has the advantage cause Million Dollar Baby has more momentum then Closer.

Best Sup Actress: Virgina Madsen. I'm feeling kinda Anti-Australian, hehe. Blanchete has more working for her than Madsen, but I still think Madsen gave a better performance.

Original Screenplay: Eternal Sunshine. Go Kauffman.

Adapted: Sideways.

Okay...

I consider myself an Oscar doyen... (yes, a doyen) ... when it comes to watching the oscars. I've been watching them since '96. And here's how my thought pattern has gone....

1st half hour: shit, Aviator and million dollar baby are neck and neck. Net you Aviator wins the nexr award... oop, they do!

2nd hour: million dollar baby just won nes actress. Do tyhey have a chance?

3rd hour: My second bottle of wine. It's Cab Sav. See, I'm not a zombie freak following Sideways (blergh, we must conquer humans and drink pinot noir blerhg!!!) Anyway, The Aviator is still in the leauge.

3rd hour and a half: f*ck f*ck f*ckf*ckf*ckf*ckf*ck... Charlie Kaufman won for Best Screenplay, YAY!!!

3rd hour and a half. Eastwood won for best director and... well, fuck it, best picturee too... all hail eastwood and this second bottle of wine I've drunk!!

I have to admit, I don't think I've seen any of the films that won oscars this year.

Ah well, either way I'm sure the women's magazines will be analyzing the clothes that the movie stars wore to the ceremony for the next couple of months at least.

BerserkerTails

My girlfriend and I had a list of who we thought the winners of all the catagories would be... And we got owned.

We guessed FOUR awards correctly.

I'm at least glad I guessed The Incredibles correctly, it was my favorite movie of the past year. I saw it THREE times. My mom was rooting for Shrek 2, but like I've said before: "Shrek 2 is an excellent animated movie, but The Incredibles is an excellent movie, period."
I make music.

MrColossal

I think we're all missing the big picture here...

With news like this, finally, this world is safe again.

Best part of last night's oscars: It was a chance for me to get drunk and shout obscenities at the TV. I can hardly remember the ceremony at all. I feel like Leonard from Memento. EDIT: Ah, wait, I remember Chris Rock's opening. That was funny.

Worst part of last night's oscars: My hangover. It hurts. Lots.

Haha DG, someday I'll have to tell you my story about the Oscars and drinking alcohol.

You'll feel a lot better about yourself, trust me!
