try looking there maybe.

Or as was said, use the search function on these forums. Search for Free Midis or something, mods gave out a bunch of free music a while ago, look for those.

Mr Flibble

Music is just as important as graphics when making a game, so why is it that people never want to make their own music?
It seems strange that people will *usually* put a lot of effort into making graphics, but then gloss over the music.
Heres a few links to MIDI composing softwares that I use. Or rather, names that you can type into Google.

Noteworthy Composer

SuperJAM (especially good for beginners)

ANVIL (I don't use it but I hear good things)

Reason (for digital music. Again, untested).

Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

Some People just don't understand music I think, and most people have drawn a picture or two in their life, so thats not too hard to try....

Mr Flibble

I have little to no musical talent whatsoever, but I'm learning.
And if I can learn to compose, ANYBODY can.

Paper Carnival

Yeah, even if you are not born with a talent, you can train yourself to get to a good level.

MrColossal

But there is no need to train myself to any good level, there are already so many things I have to teach myself, music is not something of priority.

I'd much rather spend all of my time teaching myself how to be a better artist instead of dividing my time between art and music and be only a kind of good artist and a crappy musician.

What I will say is that there are tons of musicians on this board so there is plenty of opportunity to get someone to make an original soundtrack

Yes, but the importance of graphics is obvious - they're onscreen in front of you the whole time you're playing, but the music - if it's doing it's job right - you shouldn't really be that aware of  in-game (with the exception of the main theme, of course). So, it might be seen more as a 'bonus' to be included if there's time, or you can find someone else to take care of it, but not actaully that important. I'm not saying that's true, just that I can see the thinking - it's a lot more obvious when a game/TV show/film doesn't have ambient music, than when it does (to me at least).

('ambient' mightn't be the best word here, but I don't know what is. Background? Incidental?)

Another thing (speaking from experience) is that while, yes, you can learn how to make your own music, if you're also learning how to draw decent backgrounds, characters, animations, etc (or, in my case, learning to draw something that looks even vaguely like it's meant to), having another thing to learn is a little daunting (pretty much what MrC said above). Especially if you couple that with the thinking that you really only need a 'theme tune', so it's not worth going to the trouble.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Pelican

Thats my argument too.Ã,  ;D

I don't really notice game music that much - its just something to break the silence. Occassionally I'll notice it, if its used to heighten the atmosphere somewhat (like in a scary game), but on the whole its not something I pay attention to. With the graphics, you're going to spend the entire game looking at them, and manipulating the objects within them, so obviously they're more noticable. Graphics are pretty much integral to a 'graphical' adventure, whereas the music is just a nice bonus.

And personally I find it infinitely easier to learn and improve drawing skills, than compose music. With the graphics, you can do things like taking photos and painting over them to help you learn, but you can't do that with composition. Its pretty much a case of learning it from scratch. And when its a choice between improving graphics, which can be done rather quickly once you get the hang of it, and improving music, which may require some music classes, I know what I'll pick.

(That's my excuse for having little or no music in my games :P)

Mr Flibble

Go play Grim Fandango. But the text on so the game is playable then turn your speakers off.

Play through the whole game, or at least until you get my point.
