Recently I got my friend's father to make me a custom drum kit.  It's a full 100% maple drum set (7-ply shells), all I had to pay for was the materials and hardware.  It got it maddeeee real cheap ($650 australian).

Here are the sizes for people who know about drums:

22 x 16 Bass Drum
10 x 8 Tom
12 x 10 Tom
14 x 14 Tom
14 x 5.5 Snare

I've been playing drums for sixteen years and I do it professionally, so now I have two drumsets.  I'm so excited, my other kit is a Sonor Sonic Plus (6-ply birch shells).  So now I have choice.

I thought I'd put this up, cause I was excited and needed to tell people.  Here is a pic for you to look at too :)

P.S. Getting more cymbals next, being carefully with the selection.  Getting the good sounding ones, considering there so inconsistent.  Should be getting more soon :P

Sweet.
I dare not post a picture of my set since it suxors teh big 1.

What are those black things on the toms? Does that help agains the buzzing?

Gaffer, yeah you make a small fin and it controls the sound more :)

More defined punch, with less overtone.

Sweet. I just got my electric guitar as well :)

Really good looking. Makes my Yamaha 9000 kit blush in shame...

Ooh, that's a cool trick, making the little fin with the gaffers tape! Please post a pic of your Sonor kit, too!

Lucky you, but it sounds like you deserve those drumkits. :)

Looks really nice.  Sounds like you got a great deal on it to boot.

You mentioned you play drums professionally; are you in a band? or are you a journeyman drummer?
Watch, I just killed this topic...

I do session work mainly, but I play in a funk band, function rock band and progressive metal band.  I also do teaching full-time :P

Strange that i missed this, but your new kit does indeed look nice.

I've got rather pissed with my kit  (or myself) recently,  it's two weeks before our next gig and i've managed to put one hell of a hole in my snare skin.  It had such a nice sound to it to, it was tuned perfectly to how i play, although not very rough it had a really nice kick back from it.  i'm franticly trying to get myself a new one but im almost skint.

Any offers?  ::)

Helm - don't ask! :P

Dean, loving the kit!

Nice, but it still seems dreadfully puny, next to Mike Portnoy's kit.

Mind you, not everyone can be a virtuoso. :'(
<pslocum> I appreciate your commitment to excellence both in orange juice and crazy f***ing monkeys. And combinations thereof.

<Mr-Bungle> Thank you. I appreciate this comment.

Great looking set! Though the snare has taken a bit of punishment. Is that a DW? :=

I'm getting myself a Pearl Reference or Masters series set sometime soon. I'm leaving the order this week. Pretty much the same sizes, except with a bigger bass drum and an additional floor tom, 16x16. I couldn't decide on 14 or 16 so I'm taking them both. :)

Zildjian's cymbal configurator thing on their site might be helpful if you're getting new cymbals. I picked most of my cymbals there and they sound as I imagined in reality too.

How is the professional drumming? Is it like sometimes you get lots of offers and sometimes none? Do you get a living from it? I'm just interested because I've thought about doing drumming for a living.

Not bad. How do you like the pinstripes on the toms? I used them for awhile and just recently switched back to coated and they play like milky goodness. The pinstripes are awesome if you want a lot of attack, though.

I got myself a Tama Starclassic. Can't recall the sizes off the top of my head..

Also, play however you want.. but just a suggestion. Unless you are extremely tall I would try dropping the snare a couple inches.. or at least mess with the height a bit. What is most important is your comfort, but if you drop it a couple inches more then likely you with get better stick control... if you can get used to the gap to the first tom. As well mess with the distance the high-hatt is. I would pull it in a little tighter.. I mean that is your time keeper in the average song you are going to hit that thing at least 200 times, so the better positioned it is the less you are going to want to kill people with numb arms when the song is done.

Or play it as is.. I'm not holding a knife or anything and sitting outside your WINDOW!

I play traditional grip, so that is the reason why I play it that high.  Secondly a big drumkit doesn't mean your automatically a virtuoso.  Look at all the great jazz drummers out there.

Lol, yeah I need to replace the snare drum head, its older than the tom heads...lol

Lol, I know my setup Sylpher, I've been playing for a long time and I'm happy with how it is.

Oh and yes I am 6"1 .. lol
