Bad Voo-doo man

Well, I'm trying to fix a comp. for a friend of my parents, and they wanted me to install a MSI 865PE Neo2-V mother board in it.Ã,  Everything is hooked up right, all the fans, leds, and cd drives come on like they are supposed to, but there's no signal at all sent to the monitor...Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Make sure your IDE cords are all correctly inserted and hooked up.. Specifically your HD ones. I've had this happen to me before. Everything turned on but the monitor and HDs. It turns out it was a faulty IDE cable.

Thanks, I'll check those IDE cables, and keep you updated

Well, the hdd light comes on now.Ã,  I tried a new IDE cable, on all of them, but still nothing.Ã,  I think the monitor is getting a signal, because it does flash if you plug it in while its on, but after that it just stays black - yes, the brightness is up and what not (for those of you who just had to ask)Ã,  :=..any other tips you guys?

plugin graphics card.

seriously, doublecheck all connectors.
does the graphics adapter need additional power?
have you plugged in all power plugs?
check your ram, does it meet the mobo's requirements?

and also, don't doublepost. there's an edit-button.
... it's quite easy being the best.

Does the computer make any beeps?  If so, look up the beep codes for your computer's BIOS and that should tell you what is wrong.  A quick search found beep codes for AMI, PHOENIX, and Award BIOS's.  These are all from an unofficial so I don't know how accurate they are.  On a normal boot, you should at least get one beep.

I recently put together a new computer that wouldn't turn on the monitor and didn't make any beeps.  After replacing the motherboard it worked.  Hopefully that's not your problem.

Good Luck!

Two things my friend did wrong once (true stories):
1) Make sure that the power cable is hooked up all the way and that the computer is plugged in.
2) Check if your video card needs to be plugged in to the power supply, too.

try checking that your cpu and memory are plugged in correctly.  IIRC, if your cpu or memory are in properly, some mb's do this.

Everythings hooked up right, I've checked, and double check, and even triple checked...I've built A LOT of comps but this one still has me stumped

Okay, since I'm having headache techache all the time enough to write a book, I'll share the knowledge of everything that usually goes wrong...

* electricity*

Try unplugging power from some drives - if you have more stuff than just one HD and one CDROM, there can be not enough power for whole junk. Sounds impossible, but I have witnessed (and cursed!) it more than enough.

Also, check that your case has enough Watts to feed the motherboard. 300W should be standard right now, if i'm not mistaken. This may happen if you bought new motherboard and installed it to older case, which has less power.

* IDE cables*

As everyone told, faulty boot happens usually when some of IDE cables are incorrectly installed. Which is still most likely where you messed up. Try turning IDE cables around (both on motherboard and drives, since not ALL drives go by standard "red/black marked line side towards power cable") and see if that works, it should be safe (of course, double-think/consult someone smarter before trying, but i have tried such thing like hundred times and nothing bad happened).

* motherboard LED *

I bought my motherboard a year ago and it has 2-digit LED display on it. Check if yours have such thing. It's very useful, when you boot, it shows a number or letters. These are start-up-fail codes, which are explained in motherboard's manual. This helps to determine the problem.

* raw test *

Unplug all drives, unneccessary cards and try then.

* BIOS battery *

See if it's inserted and correctly, maybe turn it around?

* RAM *

Try different slots, also if having more than 1 chip, leave only one inside and try.

* hardware testing *

If possible, try all cards, RAM and drives out in some other computer, to see if they work and didn't get damaged during assembly.

* Conflicting video cards *

Does motherboard have onboard video? If so, remove other card and try.

* Faulty motherboard *

Buy a shotgun & hockey mask and go back to the store where you bought the board.

EDIT: Oh, and there's a fancy thing called Central Processing Unit, that has to be fitted onto motherboard  ;)
So... Is CPU inserted correctly?
Does CPU fit the motherboard? (and not just "um, it went in" but technically compatible too?)

Im not comp. stupid ;), but I've checked all the parts, nothing conflicts, everythings hooked up right, and all the parts work.  It does pick up a signal, just..no display...on any monitor.  the bios batt is fine, all the jumper settings are fine, and the ide cables can only go one direction, so they're not backwords...the mother board doesn't have onboard video.

Also, this isn't the only MSI 865PE Neo2-V that did this one, a few I know of do this...but they never solved the problem...still confused

Then contact the guy who sold it to you and tell him to give you a motherboard that works :)

you can also try resetting the bios, it might work

Bad voo - doo still lazy

Its that whole line of board...I swear they all have problems, im just gonna bag it and till the ppl who wanted that specific board that they're going to have to get a different one lol thanks though you guys

Heh, I'm pretty sure this is not the problem you are having, but...
When I got my new PC, I hooked everything up, pressed the power button, and the PC booted up, but... That's right, monitor stays blank.
After about an hour of being totally and completely stumped and trying just about everything, I switched ports between the mouse and keyboard.
Everything was fine then.
Rather strange, if you ask me.

Bad voo-doo STILL lazy :)

It was the processor, it was a wilimate(??) Intel pentium 4, when I guess even though it's a pentium 4 board, i need a presscott..duh! I feel stupid lol
