This damned thunder

It was a peaceful night. Suddenly, a great storm of thunders came upon Silver Wizard's Tower. And guess what: My modem broke down from that!
My computer had been turned off, but due to the modem was connected with the telephone's plug, it was damaged by high voltage.
Ã,Â So, as a Wizard i recognise my mistakes, and i recommend you: During storms or thunder (or during whatever the Dark Powers send to you) ALWAYS disconnect your modem from telephone's plug. Personally, i stayed out of Internet for months (now i have created a new modem with anti-magic protection)

It's interesting that there are some particularly violent thunderstorms all over the world AT THE SAME TIME.
I've had the same go on. The power kept going down, and the phone lines were affected too.

BTW, it's "damned" on "dumned". Unless you are attempting to create a new word. In which case, dumned thunder!

I'm curious. I have a sort of extension which has an on/off switch, and I think it's supposed to help in case of current surges (I think that's the term). Before I had it, I had to take my PC to the store because of that, and since I had it, it has already saved my PC from that fate again once. Question: will it be any help in a thunderous day?

One time I forgot my computer was still turned on while having a pretty heavy thunderstorm. After the thunderstorm was over I realized that my computer was still turned on and I noticed it was now off, which made me believe it got damaged. I tried to reboot the computer but pressing the on or reset button did not change anything. This was pretty much when I was starting to think that my computer had been completely destroyed inside. I got pretty pissed at first but then I switched the power-switch on the backside of the computer to off and then to on again and then it worked again. Until now...

I learned a lesson that day... :

yeah, same thing happened to me once. And it was a relief realising that back switch is the key!

I have a surge-protector AND an UPS (uninteruptable power supply) with a 20 minute battery. I don't even worry when it storms out. If we lose power, I wait (and keep using the computer) for about 10 minutes. If the power isn't back on, I save everything and shut down until the power comes back on.

I figure if there's a power surge strong enough to damage my computer through all of that I'll have bigger things to worry about than a fried computer. Like ... melting flesh and burning hair.

Heh, my computer has none of that stuff. I guess thats partly because i didnt have to live thru all the crazy weather you get over there...

Aren't there blizzards where you live? We get three inches of snow a year on average, I'm sure Darth gets next to none.

A couple of years ago I turned off & unplugged everything from the mains during a close thunder storm but forgot the cable modem cable was still connected.

[an important note: don't just switch off the switch at the wall, pull out all the plugs to the computer (electrical appliance) because a surge can still easily go through a switch that is turned off]

as a result, it fried my network card, I had a spare but it made me think.

I used to have a UPS but it died.

Just as what you should do with all your AGS games in production, make sure you back up everything (not just another copy on another connected HD) keep it/them in different locations to rule out different methods of random destruction.

eg. your house burns down with your computer, and 5 backups (one in each room)

you can always get a new computer, but losing important data can be a C#%t. not that I have cause I always backup (so far)
