Hello!Ã,  I seem to have a problem viewing the help file with AGS 2.7.Ã,  When I open it, the window on the right side says "Action canceled by user" and "Page cannot be found," as if I was looking at a web site.Ã,  Does anyone know why this is happening and/or how to solve this problem?Ã,  Thanks a bunch if you can help! ^_^

Gilbert

Hmmm. The manual is in fact, sort of a collection of webpages (CHM is stort for Compiled HTML files), most mordern windows system should be able to view it without any problem (with a few exceptions, like my home WIN95 system with IE removed).

What are the specs. of your computer? (OS, IE version, etc.)

If worst comes to worst, you can download MS HTML Help off of the internet (I'm referring to the HTML Help file compiler) which also has the ability to decompile HTML Help files.  Then you could decompile the 2.7 help file into a folder, and have a collection of HTML files, which would not be very easy to navigate through, but would still contain the information.

Like I said, worst case scenario here.

Gilbert

Well this is not the worst scenario, if it's because of lacking of IE [components], version conflict, or some components not installing properly there's no way to open up the CHM files directly, even with M$ HTML Help.

For example, I need to decompile the CHMs into HTMLs using another computer, in order to view them with my WIN95 computer.

Really?  Oh...Well, I don't have that problem so I wouldn't know.  Sorry if I provided invalid information.  I was just trying to help.

Hmmm... it's kind of hard to explain what it is exactly what is wrong.  I have "The Scrolling Game Development Kit" and it uses the same kind of help file as AGS, and that works fine.  The help file worked with V1.62 so thats why I am a bit confused.  Now, if i run V1.62, the help files doesn't work either.  I did, however erase the AGS information from the registry before I noticed the problem, but I don't think that would have much to do with it since the data wasn't there before I ran the program for the first time.  And for the information on my specs: I have a Fujitsu Lifebook N Series with Windows XP Home and Internet Explorer 6.

actually, scratch that last thing about the ags 6.2 file not working... actually, it runs perfectly

Odd, are you sure your computer had all the essential up-to-date windows updates installed (so it wasn't messed up prossibly by some previous updates because of silly mistakes M$ often makes)?

Did you just clicked AGS-HELP.CHM directly, or open it from AGSEDIT?

One thing I can think of is, your system don't like the name of the file, the manual's filename had been changed to ags-help.chm since V2.7, you may try renaming it to say, agshelp.chm and see if it works (but then of course after renaming it won't be accessible by agsedit).

Also, it's V2.62, there was never a V1.62. :=

I actually did both... but I found a solution... sorta.  If I extract the .chm file separately from the rest of the files, it works fine afterward... I am just not sure why it wouldnt have extracted properly with all the other files.  Oh, and sorry about the 1.62... my finger hit the 1 instead of the 2.  I'm gonna mess around with the program tomorrow to see if I can pinpoint anything. Until then, this solution seems like a temporary fix, (if not a permanent one if no other one can be found).  Thanks for all your suggestions so far.  I appreciate it.

Okay, everybody.Ã,  I would like to thank you all for your input once again.Ã,  After a while of extracting, deleting, and messing around with AGS, I think I have figured out the problem.Ã,  For those of you who use the Windows XP unzipper to extract the program, you will most likely get the help file problem.Ã,  I have an easy solution.Ã,  There is a program called UlitmateZip that is really good for unzipping files without a problem.Ã,  This is the program that I (actually, my friend) used to unzip the latest version of AGS (2.7.1) and I (she) didn't have a problem with the help file after that.Ã,  Here is the site:
http://www.ultimatezip.com/
UltimateZip 2.7.1 is the last freely distributed version of the program. The latest version (3.0.3 at this point) is now asking that people register for it.Ã,  If you find that it is worth it, go for the latest one and register.Ã,  If not, I would stick with version UZ 2.7.1.Ã,  If anyone can figure out any other solution, please go ahead and tell us.Ã,  Thanks!Ã,  Ã, ;D

Any other solutions? Winzip ¬¬ I tried UltimateZip ages ago on a Win98 system and it seemed much heavier than Winzip, which does do it's duty - handling .zip files - well enough...
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

One of these will do fine .
TUGZip
http://www.tugzip.com/
7-Zip
http://www.7-zip.org/
I use both and have no problems with zips .

Gilbert

I use 7-ZIP only, so I never had this kind of problem, but it's really odd that the XP extractor made modifications to extracted files and render them useless (well, that extractor is a bit retarded, it can't extract some of the files with compressed methods it doesn't know, but at least it should give errors), just blame M$ (actually that's not surprising, there're times that IE forced you to save a file you downloaded to some other formats other than the original :P).
