Hello!Ã,  I've recently begun work on my first serious AGS project, and I wanted to post my first background (still in progress) for the game (yet to be titled).Ã,  I still have a lot of details to add to this room, but could anyone offer any advice on any errors i've made, or what could be improved?  When I look at this, I feel like there are too many straight lines and sharp corners.  Any ideas on how to make smoother lines or add more "life" to it?Ã,  Thank you.

Well, backgrounds aren't really my expertise (you'd need someone like Farlander, DanClarke, or Loominus) but I do see alot of odd angles that you've used to try and get depth, but have gone a bit far :).  For instance, the top two doors have extremely sharp turns (the left door turns too sharply to the right, the right one angles up too fast and the room looks small as a result).  For the door on the far right, the carpet line doesn't follow the angle of the door.  The medals appear propped up, which is fine, but you should add a corner going down on the left side so it looks better.  I like your carpet texture, but the sharp angle you have taken with this room really makes your texture job detract from the image because as the carpet gets farther away the lines would come together and blend.  I also think the dark wall lines and wall texture detract from the overall look, perhaps a flat color with shading as it moves up the wall would help.  Overall I think it is good, it just has perspective issues that you might want to work on.

A few points:
* This is a typical central perspective system. Establish a single vanishing point and make all your "vertical" lines (the ones that go into the picture) converge at that point.
* Or, skip the perspective alltoghether and just make all lines parallell. It can be a good alternative for this kind of style. What you have now is an odd mix.
* Skip the textures. Textures are almost always a big no-no.
* Decide on outlining or not outlining. Right now, you have both.
* Break up flat, boring areas with details and variations in colours and shapes.

Apart from this, you have a clean good style and a good composition to the background. Good luck.

I've done a little work on this, and here's where the image stands now:

- I backed off on the textures a bit, but left them in.Ã,  They seem to be a faux pas around here, but I kind of like them when used correctly
- I toned down the thick borders
- The computer needs serious, serious help
- Added a few more details
- Went to a black/white gradient for door transitions rather than trying to show details of the next room

It's still a work in progress, but I think it's improving.Ã,  Thank you to those who gave your input, I really appreciate it!
