All I know is that when I first came here, I didn't know what a "sticky" was, and I didn't know that there was an individual "sticky" for the rules to each section fo the forum...I had read the forum rules, yes,  but it can still be a bit confusing ( It didn't make sense to me that a question about paint shop pro would be in the critic's lounge).  Not everyone is familiar with netiquette, or standard internet rules.

And you can't expect every person who visits and posts on the forum has to read through the manual first.  That's ridiculous (at least in the non-technical threads).

Come on, that was an example, and an expression. No, I don't mean every forum member should read the manual before asking what do we think about Broken Sword 4, or something. But it's part of the thing to look for answers before asking questions.

And I know not everyone is familiar with these things. I wasn't either when I came in. I lurked awhile withou posting, and when I started posting I also did quite a lot of mistakes. Some people were kind about it like you. Others let me know, in the way that I let Dancer know, that it wasn't the way to do it. It was ALL part of the learning process, even the "beatings". Here's an example - twice I started threads on which I asked for opinions, but whose starting theme was subjective and not properly documented (i.e., I thought I knew what I was talking about, but I didn't). Neither of those threads were a pretty sight, and I got harsh responses, but guess what? I'm certainly not doing THAT again.

Maybe it's just because I got beat up so much as a little kid, that I don't care for "beating" initiations... :'(

You make fine points.   But for every person who can stand the punishment, there could be plenty of others who are so turned off by a first impression that they find some other hobby or forum or group of people to associate with.  I just think we should be as welcoming as possible, so that we can attract non-hardcore adventure gamers in addition to the normal monkey island freaks.

Rui 'Trovatore' Pires

Aye aye. That's why these discussions about it also serve to show newcomers that for every beater like me there's at least one person who will try to make their life easier. :)

Besides, it's not the first time that a thread with a "Yes/no" question gets answered in a single word in a certain post. Not at all. And curt as that "google" line was, wasn't it true? Isn't that the basis of the whole "netiquette", so to speak? Search before you ask, and all that? I just commented on it. I do believe that if it weren't for Dancer's 3rd post on this thread (reply #5) the issue wouldn't even have BEEN an issue. :P

It's certainly true that other threads have been answered in a similar fashion, and I'm certainly not picking on you specifically, Rui.

The point is simply that it is the moderators duty to tell people if they are posting inappropriately. Otherwise, the old adage "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" should really apply.

Once again, I'm not referring specifically to this thread at all; I'm just bored of seeing arguments and aggressive posts around here.
People, if you think someone's post is stupid then just don't reply, and a moderator will handle it in due course.

I'm sorry I didn't post this sooner. I kind of got scared away from this topic before, but I decided to come back and see what happened. You all made very good points and I'd just like to clear up that :

I did google it. I was actually, like Anarcho said, looking for more of a discussion on it. I'm sorry I only titled the post the way I did. I've been to many forums actually and most of those ones have been very liberal, like people will just basically say anything. I thought that maybe by titling it the way I did, I'd at least get some attention. But, maybe I didn't think it through very well. I am a very nice person and I never mean any harm to anyone.

Also, the way I reacted was probably not too smart either. I got a little upset and I shouldn't have. I felt attacked when I guess I wasn't. It's just kind of hard to sense what people really mean by what they type you know? The way I saw Rui's post was sarcastic and mean, like she was saying I was an idiot for not posting right or something. If that's not the case, I'd like to apologize to him/her personally.

Even though, like I said, I have been to many forums (just to basically skim), I am fairly new to how to post and everything. I mean I'm only really used to chat. It seems like forums aren't as easy as chat, they are much more organized and, in some cases, strict. But anyway... I'm glad there are so many nice people here after all and I hope I can, one day, be a good forumer...er... (?) (hehe)
There's no emoticon for what I'm feeling!
