You need to click branch on rope and click combine object on magnet

surgical thread is what you need.

I am stuck at the gate and there is a locked door. I assume this where the computer room is.

What I need to unlock door?

If computer room is elsewhere, I simply cannot find. So far I read is near the gate but it seems to be pixel hunting.

Okay, I'm doing something wrong because I cannot even combine the surgical thread with the branch. Usually in these games you drag one item in inventory over another to combine it but here when I do that, the first item disappears and the end result is nothing gets combined. Can anyone help?

When you drag the surgical thread, you have to click it on branch and click the combine object on magnet. That how this game work.

I think I know what the problem.

It quite possible you did move tread outside the inventory.

Try this:
While drag you tread, be sure you stay in the inventry area when clicking on other objects. That should work.
